Your scientific poster will have a title plus five sections.
Title
Introduction
Methods
Findings
Recommendations
References
Make sure there is a coherent flow through the sections. It should read like a report. Make sure it is clear to the reader:
1) What your aims were
2) That the answers to your research question have been answered by the end
Title (10 – 15 words)
Does your title match the original problem?
Is your title the same as the title in Assignment 3 (page 12-14
Does your title show clearly what your poster is about?
Introduction (100 - 150 words)
Look at Assignment 1 and 3 . Summarize what you wrote.
What is the problem?
Why are you interested in this problem?
What are the causes of this problem?
Who or what is affected by it?
What is the aim of the research?
(Present simple tense)
Methods (75 - 100 words)
Write a paragraph on your various sources and how you collected your information.
(Past tense OR past passive tense)
Findings (*150 -200 words)
Your research questions guide you to useful information.
You must summarize and synthesize this information to make it original.
You must paraphrase the information in each Finding; do not plagiarize.
This information can become one of your four Findings.
Your Findings are then the results of your research.
Is each Finding a separate idea, not similar to the other Findings?
Is each Finding directly linked to the title?
Does each Finding have supporting details (e.g. evidence, statistics)?
Is each Finding supported by a suitable image?
Recommendations (100 words)
(i) Recommendation:
Which of your four Findings is the best one?
(We recommend Finding (x) because…)
Why is it the best one?
Give four distinct reasons.
(ii) Significance: How will this Finding be significant (i.e. beneficial) for Oman?
Give four reasons.
(iii) Future Research: What ideas do you have for future research by other scientists?
What were you not able to research for this poster?
What should the next step be for your research team or other scientists?
References
Include all three different types of sources below:
Book or journal (online or hard copy)
(use APA)
Website up to date (2010-2019)
(e.g. newspaper article. Title, complete website address, date accessed)
Interview1 and survey2.
1Name, job title, place of work, location, date of interview
2Who surveyed, number of respondents, source of survey, when surveyed
The elements should be logically arranged:
Introduction on the top left
Methods bottom left
Findings in the middle in 4 section grid
Recommendations top right
References bottom right
2. The elements should be clearly labelled – Introduction, Methods, Findings, etc.
3. The poster should have a good balance of text and image.
4. Set the poster size to A0 in PowerPoint or Publisher before you begin making the poster.
You can use Portrait and Landscape style.
The dimensions are 1189 x 841 mm or 46.811 x 33.11 in. Landscape not Portrait
5. Remember if you View 100% of the document, you will only see a very small part of your poster because you have set the size to A0.
6. Make sure there is a coherent flow through the sections.
7. Use only one font style for the whole poster. Which one do you like?
8. Different parts of the poster must have different font sizes. Here are some suggestions:
Title (font size: 72-85 points)
Headings (font size: 40)
All Text (font size: 26-28)
Names, College(s) (font size: 24)
Captions, References (font size: 18-20)
Sources (font size: 18-20)
9. Font size for student names must not be larger than the text.
10. Use left justification for the text in the text boxes.
11. Do NOT use more than two or three colours. Use delicate, pastel shades, not primary colours.
12. Do not use decorative backgrounds. They distract from the message, making it difficult to read the text.
13. Make sure images have a good resolution.
14. Make sure all images have appropriate captions and sources.
15. Use scale bars with images where appropriate.
16. The axes of graphs should be clearly labelled.
17. Use light backgrounds with dark text or dark background with light text.
Avoid light on light NO👎 BUT Use dark on light YES 👍
Avoid dark backgrounds. Use light backgrounds with dark text or dark background with light text. Do not use black as a background.
18. Do NOT use black as a background or design feature.
19. Save your scientific poster on a USB flash drive and in Google Drive.
20. Each group member should have a copy of your scientific poster on her/his USB flash drive and have access to the group’s Google Drive folder.
21. Keep an updated backup on Google Drive.
22. Print your poster in A0 size at any print shop using your USB flash drive. Allow enough time for printing as the shops get very busy near the exhibition time.
23. There will be an exhibition in the CPS or online of all Lanc 2058 scientific posters at the end of the course.
