Active learning is a student-centred approach that encourages using a variety of learning activities, instructional methods and strategies that enhance learners’ engagement and activate their thinking while learning (Hung, 2015; Kusumoto, 2018). Active learning has also been described as “a process whereby students engage in activities, such as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving that promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of class content” ("Curriculum resources," 2017). Active learning-based pedagogy differs from the traditional lecturing-based pedagogy where teachers are seen as knowledge transmitters and students are viewed as passive recipients of teachers' knowledge. In active learning-based pedagogy, enhancing student engagement and creating meaningful learning experiences are key elements (Prince, 2004). As stated by Kane (2004), while students have a participatory and active role in an active learning-based pedagogy, teachers become learning facilitators. Thus, traditional roles attributed to students and teachers are transformed in active learning-based environments. Through converting teacher-centred classrooms into student-centred ones, students are encouraged to engage in self-directed learning as well as collaborative and cooperative learning project-based tasks.
