Active learning enables learners to apply knowledge in a new context. It focuses on how students learn and not on what they learn. Active learners need to develop skills necessary for life-long learning by developing autonomy which is considered to be a valuable asset for achievement and an outcome of higher education (Bonwell & Eison, 1991). Additionally, student-focused learning and teaching approaches promote self-directed learning and independent thinking. Active learning equips students with the 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving. These types of activities encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and explore new things (Qureshi, Bradley, Vishnumolakala, Treagust, Southam, Mocerino, & Ojeil, 2016).
