The students in grades K through 8th attend a weekly art class. Elements of art including pattern, design, line, shape, and form are all included within each grade, as well as shading techniques, principles of color and art history. Students create seasonal works of art and focus on Catholic holidays as well. Creating art expands children's minds and offers them an outlet to express themselves. At St. Patrick School we feel that art cultivates important skills that truly benefit a child's development. In the spring, we have an art show. An outside company frames each child's individual work which is available to purchase with the frame. Our students' artwork is displayed in our hallways throughout the year.
Our Media program encourages appreciation of books and enhacement of technology skills. Students in grades K through 2 are able to explore books in class and remotely via Kindle and Epic Books, as well as in print using document cameras. In addition to author studies, some of the topics we have focused on are friendships, seasons, holidays, and proper hygiene. Our students in grades 3 through 4 are leaning how to navigate Google Classroom and use sites such as Readworks, CommonLit, Newsela, Trueflix, and ReadWriteThink in order to respond to reading assignments. The students are focusing on improving their non-fiction reading comprehension. Internet literacy and research skills are being focused on in 5th grade through 6th grade. The students will use this information to create infographics about a topic they are interested using Google Draw. Our 7th and 8th grade students are developing their applied digital skills. They create posters using Google Draw, prepare presentations using Google Slides, and Infographics using Canva. All of their work is used to create a digital portfolio!
The students in grades K-8 attend a general music class once a week where various elements of music are taught and explored. In kindergarten through first grade the focus is on rhythm patterns, instrument families, and beginner drum instruction is introduced in order to encourage active participation in an inviting environment. In addition to the elements of music, our second graders receive recorder instrument instruction weekly. Our fifth graders attend a weekly chorus class where they not only learn a repertoire of songs to be performed, but become part of a musical community where they learn about their vocal instrument. Chorus is an important part of our music curriculum as it fosters a sense of community, responsibility, and team work which culminate in our Christmas and spring performances.. The curriculum includes music history and the study of various composers. Students learn that music is part of their everyday life and have opportunities to perform in their classes. Students also learn hymns for the first Friday Masses and religious celebrations. NYSSMA is available in the spring and SCMEA is offered as well.
Our physical education curriculum was created to develop in students the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors to promote a healthy level of physical fitness. Our goal is to instill in our students a commitment to consistent lifelong participation in active, healthy lifestyles. These activities will be performed in an active and supportive atmosphere where all students will be challenged to achieve success through a spirit of cooperation, sportsmanship, and respect for one's self and others. Throughout the school year, we focus on cooperative activities each day, allowing team building amongst the students. In addition, sports such as soccer, flag-football, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, and lacrosse are introduced at each level.
