First grade is a time of tremendous growth academically, physically, socially, and spiritually. Our students' environment encourages them to take risks, acquire new skills and engage in lessons that create an excitement about learning. Aligned with both New York State and Diocese of Rockville Centre standards, our cross-curricular approach connects content areas using units of study. Topics such as bats, penguins, ocean life and the rainforest enrich our science and social studies program using biology, map skills, and geography. Our language arts program is literature based which encompasses phonics, grammar, reading, and spelling. Our Go Math series has interactive features that students can use both in the classroom and at home. Our first grade students encounter their faith through First Friday Mass and religious studies. They take part in an annual tradition, dressing up as a saint and sharing with the congregation, during Mass, all the things they learned about their saint. Our first graders also take part in school wide events such as Halloween & spring dances, field day, picnics and so much more!
Our second graders explore the world around them through engaging lessons. Our language arts curriculum consists of fiction and non fiction stories. New vocabulary and spelling is introduced weekly and students are required to read independently and complete a monthly book study. Writing is a focus in second grade. Students utilize literary and grammar skills to write factual reports, book critiques, and creative writing pieces. Students in second grade also learn to write in cursive. The Go Math program engages students through interactive lessons on topics such as place value, regrouping with addition and subtraction, along with exploration of geometry. A cross-curriculum approach is used to study historical topics such as the Native Americans, Martin Luther King,Jr., presidents, explorers, and a favorite of our second graders, Christmas around the world! Science topics such as oceans, weather, and nocturnal animals are explored. The most important part of second grade is receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Children draw closer to God and enter into a relationship with Him that will last a lifetime!
Third grade offers our students a wonderful learning experience in a welcoming and nurturing classroom environment grounded in faith. Our curriculum allows students to explore cultures and traditions of the world around them. They learn to grow in independence, both academically and spiritually. A sense of community is tied into the content areas of social studies, science, and religion. Fun activities such as virtual field trips, hands on science experiments, and publishing hardcover stores written and illustrated by our own third grade students are some of the fun activities that bring our third grade curriculum to life!
Fourth Graders at St. Patrick School are engaged in dynamic lessons throughout the curriculum. The math curriculum moves through multiplication with single digit and double digit factors, division, fractions and decimals, as well as geometry. Students are provided with opportunities to explore these topics in small groups aided with manipulatives and technology. The ELA curriculum gives students exposure to various genres of literature in the form of short stories, non fiction pieces, poetry, as well as novel studies that include Because of Winn Dixie, Lemonade Wars, and Loser. Science and Social Studies allow for many opportunities for cross curricular lessons. Fourth Graders participate in an Invention Convention which focuses on learning about the Industrial Revolution and then applying that knowledge and inspiration in the creation of their very own inventions! Religion is taught informally and formally daily. Students focus on living their faith in their actions and deeds with the motto; Think like Jesus, Speak like Jesus, Act like Jesus.
Fifth-grade at St. Patrick School is a year of growth across several different subject areas and domains. Over the course of the year, our students learn to become more responsible and independent learners while strengthening their Catholic faith. Students switch classes in preparation for middle school. The schedule allows our students to learn developmentally-appropriate subject matter in each class everyday, as well as the chance to attend a double period of each subject once a week. Main focuses are the sacraments, familiarity with the Bible, the Rosary, saints, and Christian character traits, as well as Catholic holidays and holy days. The elements of the Language Arts program include vocabulary, spelling, grammar, writing, and reading and are interwoven throughout the curriculum through the use of several textbooks, novels and teacher-created lessons. Various fields of Science are explored and supplemented with experiments, non-fiction reading materials, and websites. The scientific method is taught and students participate in a Science Fair. Our students work toward proficiency in several areas of mathematics such as place value, division, evaluating expressions, fractions, decimals, and geometry. Instruction for these concepts is supported by the implementation of our curriculum and several projects that help students understand the real-life applications of each concept. Students become young historians as they analyze primary and secondary sources throughout the year. Through fun, interactive lessons that incorporate technology, students will navigate topics including ancient Native American civilizations, the Age of Exploration, Colonial Settlements, the American Revolution, the Constitution, the Civil War, and more! During the school year, the 5th-grade classes have gone on several field trips which include Adventureland for Technology Day, Walt Whitman Birthplace, and the John Engelman Theater.
