8th Grade Applicants
Who is Eligible to Apply
Students living in Suffolk who are interested in the IB Program at King's Fork High School are strongly encouraged to apply during their eighth grade year. In order to be eligible to apply, a student must:
Be enrolled in Algebra I or higher
Be enrolled in the first year of a foreign language or higher
Maintain a 3.0 GPA during the 8th grade year
Application Process
Complete the online application: Please click here to access the application. Applications will be available from November 13, 2023-December 18, 2023. (If you missed this deadline, please contact Shawn Barnard, IB Specialist at 757-923-5240, or shawnbarnard@spsk12.net.
Complete a writing sample. For applicants attending a Suffolk Public Schools middle school, the writing session will be scheduled through your guidance counselor. You and your parents will be notified when the writing session will be held at your school (Jan 10, 2024 -Jan 17, 2024). For home schooled applicants or those attending a private school, your writing session will be scheduled individually with your parents. For all applicants, the writing prompt is very general. The applicant's writing ability will be assessed rather than any specific content knowledge.
Grade Transcripts: For applicants attending a Suffolk Public Schools middle school, the IB Specialist will obtain a copy of your 8th grade first semester grades once they are finalized at the end of the first semester. For home schooled applicants or those attending a private school, applicants should submit a copy of your first semester report card as soon as your grades are finalized. Applicants can scan and email the report card to Shawn Barnard, IB Specialist at shawnbarnard@spsk12.net, or mail a copy of the report cart to Shawn Barnard's attention at King's Fork High School, 351 King's Fork Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434
Teacher Recommendations: For applicants attending a Suffolk Public Schools middle school, the student should request teacher recommendations for three teachers of choice. For students attending a private school, the IB Specialist will provide you with the teacher recommendation forms for you to give to your teachers of the subjects listed above. Your teachers will mail their recommendation forms to Shawn Barnard, King's Fork High School, 351 King's Fork Rd., Suffolk, VA 23434, or fax them to 757-923-5242 (Attn: Shawn Barnard, IB Specialist).
Application decisions are made March 1, 2024. The parents of all applicants will be notified via email and hard copy of the application decision for their son/daughter.
