At Hope for Suffolk, we invest in teenagers through our (1) paid work on our organic vegetable farm and (2) personal development workshops. Our workshops address things like conflict resolution, communication skills, setting & achieving goals, interview skills and much more.
Here is how it works:
Students apply online at www.hopeforsuffolk.org. Students must be 15 by March 1st to apply.
Nyasia Johnson, our Program Manager (who happens to be a Lakeland alumnus and Nansemond River teacher!), contacts the applicants to begin the interview process.
45 students are accepted into the 2024 Hope for Suffolk internship. The internship lasts from March through October 2024.
Interns are paid to work on the organic farm and receive community service hours for attending workshops.
We sell the organic produce grown so that we can pay our interns. Customers can purchase produce through our farm share program at www.hopeforsuffolk.org.
Interns put on a Harvest Festival on September 28th.
Graduates of Hope for Suffolk qualify to apply for our academic scholarships. We are granting $5,000 in scholarships this year.

The Boone-Turner Scholarship Corporation (BTSC) was established in 1995. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt
foundation promoted by the Epsilon Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc. BTSC is
named in honor of the late William H. Boone and the late W. Lowell Turner, two Alpha Men, who
dedicated over sixty (60) combined years educating the youth of the Hampton Roads area.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has a long and distinguished history of involvement, achievement, and
leadership in inspiring young individuals to reach high and strive for excellence in all aspects of their
lives. Alpha’s philosophy is, that a well-trained mind is the one vehicle that will supply our nation with a
strong nucleus of productive citizens.
The “Go to High School, Go to College” initiated by Alpha Phi Alpha in 1929, counsels youth on the
importance of a post-secondary education and professions that promote advancement.
The Boone-Turner Scholarship Corporation’s scholarships are produced by a joint effort among Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the business community and the many individuals who donate their time,

The African American Leadership Society STEM Scholarship program of the United Way of South Hampton Roads is looking for current high school seniors. The program aims to take advantage of the stellar scientific rigor provided by the Tidewater school system and assist Black high school seniors who aim to enroll in college as STEM majors in the Fall of 2024.
Recipients will receive up to $10,000 to spearhead their academic excellence in the STEM fields – a potential game-changer - as we know first-hand that students of stellar caliber often separate from their university trajectory due to financial constraints.
