Math Program
In 3rd Grade within the EnVision Math Program, instructional time in our math program should focus on four critical areas: developing understanding of multiplication and division (strategies for both operations within 100, developing a clear understanding of fractions with a numerator of 1 (unit fractions), developing an understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area, and lastly, being able to describe and analyze two-dimensional shapes. With the EnVision math program this year, and you will see your child's math work each day because we send home their class work daily. We are excited to do 'more with less' in our third grade math curriculum to focus upon mastering concepts, rather than just exposing concepts for 'mastery at the moment'.
What is Math Fact Fluency?
'Math fact fluency is the ability to quickly recall addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of math facts through conceptual learning, fact strategies, and memorization. The four key components to determine mastery are 1) flexibility, 2) appropriate strategy use, 3) efficiency, and 4) accuracy.
When students achieve automaticity of their facts, a common benchmark is that they can recall them in two seconds or less (30 problems in 60 seconds). This skill is essential for students to master and tremendously impacts their future in mathematics. However, it is important to note that students naturally progress at their own rate. As teachers and parents, we need to provide a strong foundation for students (conceptual learning and strategies) followed by daily opportunities to practice (memorization) in fun and engaging ways. '
In class we have some time built in to work on fluency, as well as to progress monitor their work (we use Just the Facts in class and some of you may have continued your second grade work over the summer in this program). For homework, they need to continue to work on ways to build that math fact fluency, at their own pace. We do not send home specific items to work on each night, we give families the opportunity to work on facts their way each night. If you need resources, flashcards, or fact sheets that focus on one specific fact we are here to assist.
EnVisions Digital Family Engagement: Each may topic will have digital help you can access at home. The topic overview and examples of each lesson are in each of these links and at-home practical activities that can reinforce the lesson. (Below you can access Topic 1 to see this engagement option with lesson videos and optional at-home activities). Each Topic I will send you the link on the Class Dojo so you do not have to go into my district webpage.)
