It might mean not giving a grade until the work is excellent. Delaying the grade is a powerful strategy that ensures that children get their very best work on paper. In this strategy students really pay attention to the feedback the teachers give because they aren't going to get a grade until the teacher is satisfied. Once a grade is returned, some students are happy to settle for that, even if it's a low grade. And they don't even look at the feedback that the teacher spent time providing! Let's work smarter and delay the grade.
Things we say and things we don't say at Springs. This month our focus is on words we say when talking about SCHOOL.
We are a Charter School, instead of a traditional public school. Charter Schools are a public school of choice. They serve ALL student populations. Charter schools are tuition free. They are not private schools. Charter schools are designed to be different than non-chartered public schools. Charter schools have the freedom to make many decisions at the school level, are unique insomuch as each school is governed by its own charter. In exchange for greater autonomy, they also have greater accountability than traditional public schools.
We emphasize the importance of Social-Emotional Learning. Social emotional learning (SEL) is a methodology that helps students of all ages to better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and demonstrate empathy for others. These learned behaviors are then used to help students make positive, responsible decisions; create frameworks to achieve their goals, and build positive relationships with others. We have identified 7 SEL targets at Springs we refer to as the 7Cs (caring community, communication, connection, confidence, coping, and celebration).
