Junior High Band Camp at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. This camp has been around for a very long time. The teachers are outstanding, the quality of education is very high, and the kids always have a blast with the fun activities. Huntsville is only about an hour north of here, so it would be a fairly easy drop-off and pick-up.
Another camp is hosted at a university with a long tradition of excellence. The quality of the camp is comparable to the SHSU camp; Beaumont is a little bit further away, though.
Both of these camps have a similar daily schedule (small group instruction, full band rehearsals, elective classes, and fun activities), and have the option to be all-inclusive or commuter-based. Prices change based on your preference; see the website for more details.
Houston Area:
Hosted in Clear Creek in the Southeast Houston area. This camp is mornings only, with no recreational activities planned, and no overnight stay option.
San Jacinto Community College Camp
This is by far the cheapest camp at $30, and is very similar to the Stars and Stripes camp. Camp is in the morning only, and no recreational activities or overnight options. Both camps end with an extended day on Friday with a concert to close it out.
Instrument-specific camps:
There are instrument-specific camps for flutes and for double reed instruments (bassoon, oboe). The quality of instrument-specific instruction will be higher, but there will not be any full band rehearsals and/or concerts.
Mrs. Williamson, our flute lesson teacher, has been affiliated with this camp for many years, so we highly recommend it for flute players.
This is a great camp for trombone, euphonium, and tuba students. I know some of the founding faculty members personally; this is bound to be a great experience.
This is a great camp for double reed players. In addition to great instrumental instruction, students will also learn the basics of reed making. An invaluable skill, which will not only help them be better players, but might save you some money on reeds in the future. The founders of this camp also wrote the book that we use in class.
