Sight Words

Sight Words, or High Frequency Words, are words students must memorize and recognize by sight. Often, sight words do not follow typical rules of the English language and must be memorized because if students were to try and decode (or figure out) the words, the words would be read incorrectly. We memorize and practice sight words because it helps build confidence and reading fluency.

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standard set by the state requires kindergarten students to identify and read at least 25 high frequency words from a commonly used list. Spring ISD requires our students to identify and read 76 sight words total, including 20 nouns that will assist students in reading comprehension.

Spring has broken down the sight words and nouns by 9 weeks - for each nine weeks there is a set of sight words and nouns we will be learning at school. We will be assessing students every so often on how many sight words they can read and identify. Please continue working at home with your children on these words. We win as a team!
