Understand how respect, empathy, responsible behavior, and other social, emotional and intellectual habits competencies help students succeed in school and life.

  • Create a positive classroom environment with routines and procedures that provides frequent and varied opportunities for students to develop and to support classmates in developing social, emotional and intellectual habits.

  • Make social, emotional and intellectual habits part of daily classroom life, by fostering positive working relationships, increasing student engagement, and modeling constructive behaviors.This unit allows scholars to develop relationships and become engaged with the course while participating in meaningful learning activities facilitated through the SpringWay systems and Routines.

  • Set up Science Journals

TEKS: Vertically Aligned Streamlined Science TEKS

August 24-28, 2020

The students will demonstrate science safety using a variety of tools and methods.

TEKS: Vertically Aligned Streamlined Science TEKS

5.1 Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student conducts classroom and outdoor investigations following home and school safety procedures and environmentally appropriate and ethical practices.

5.1(A) demonstrate safe practices and the use of safety equipment as described in the Texas Education Agency‐approved safety standards during classroom and outdoor investigations using safety equipment, including safety goggles or chemical splash goggles, as appropriate, and gloves, as appropriate Texas Safety Standards

5.2 Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student uses scientific practices during laboratory and outdoor investigations. The student is expected to;

5.4(A) collect, record, and analyze information using tools, including calculators, microscopes, cameras, computers, hand lenses, metric rulers, Celsius thermometers, mirrors, spring scales, balances, graduated cylinders, beakers, hot plates, meter sticks, magnets, collecting nets, and notebooks, timing devices; and materials to support the observation of habitats of organisms such as terrariums and aquariums

August 31-September 21, 2020

In this unit students will investigate and discover the measurable properties of matter that determines how it is classified.

TEKS: Vertically Aligned Streamlined Science TEKS

Readiness:

  • 5.5(A) classify matter based on measurable, testable, and observable physical properties, including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, and gas), relative density (sinking and floating using water as a reference point), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electric energy

Supporting:

  • 5.5(B) demonstrate that some mixtures maintain physical properties of their ingredients such as iron filings and sand or sand and water
