CHOIR TOUR FUNDRAISER CONCERT

The Choir Tour Fundraiser was held last Saturday in the convent gardens. The well-known Cape Town band Mike and the Harmonix performed an ABBA tribute concert in support of the choir. The event also featured snack stalls, face-painting and a “mocktails” kiosk. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the gardens as well as the 80s music. Thank you to all who made the event possible as well as those who supported the choir by attending.

Debating:

On Monday night, the Springfield team debaters competed against Reddam (Constantia) in a tense and closely contested first round of the Rotary debating competition. The Senior team (Alexandra Bouch, Morgan Leak and Rachael Muller) proposed the motion "This house believes that benign dictatorships are more beneficial than democratic political systems" and won, despite this being a difficult motion to argue. Our Junior team (Robyn Phillips, Sua Sung and Sophie Shackleton) successfully opposed the motion "This house believes that homework is ineffective and should be scrapped." Their performance was particularly impressive as this was Sua Sung's first competitive debate. Robyn Phillips was awarded best speaker. Well done, girls, you have made an excellent start to the season!

Ubuntu Evening

On Thursday 13 February pupils and teachers came together to celebrate amaqhawekazi (women who have been or are warriors/ heroines). We discussed topical themes under the banner of feminism and watched performances of poetry and drama monologues by girls in different grades. The Ubuntu Choir, Marimba band and Jazz band performed beautifully and we were all humbled by the prayers which were offered up by the Ubuntu society members in Arabic, Sotho , Afrikaans and Xhosa. It was a real community event, offering an opportunity to connect over good food provided by our tuckshop as well delicious bowls of peppermint crisp pudding made by members of the society. A huge thank you goes to Winnifred Mkoko, Hlombe Ndzube and Libhongo Kunene as well as the Society and Choir members for a wonderful evening.

Art

Springfield Art students Tessa De Vletter, Sarah Wilson, Jocelyn Kane-Smith and Heidi Ansorge, as well as past pupil Chloe Boetcher, and teachers Berna Meredith and Dale Macritchie visited Jean Doyle at her home recently, where they viewed her bronze sculptures in her gallery and were exposed to some of the processes which go into making a bronze sculpture. Wow what an incredible privilege and opportunity to work with Jean. Exciting times ahead for the Art department! Watch this space. Cindy Britz
