Fine Motor Practice with Shaving Cream

What you will need:

Shaving cream

Popsicle sticks

Food coloring

Baking tray

Paper towels

Spray some shaving cream on a large tray and spread it out with a popsicle stick so it forms a layer on the tray. Write out the letters of your child's first name and have them practice writing the letters in the shaving cream with their finger. To make it fun you can add food coloring to the shaving cream. You can also substitute dry pudding mix for fine motor letter practice instead of using shaving cream.

Cheerio Name Writing

What you will need:

Cheerios

Elmer's glue

Large piece of paper

Pencil

Print your child's name with a pencil on a large piece of paper. Pour some cereal in a bowl. Have your child glue cheerios onto the letters of their first name, filling the entire letter.

Digging for Letters

For this activity, tell the kids they'll be digging for buried treasures. The loot in this treasure hunt are letters of the alphabet. Hide foam or plastic letters under the sand. Hand out toy shovels and digging tools to the kids.

As the kids find the letters, have them name each letter. Older children can also identify the sound the letter represents and even name a word that begins with that letter.

Add a little math into the activity by having the kids count how many letters they find in their treasure hunt.

Sand in Shoebox

What you will need:

Sand

Cut out letters of your child's first name and also other letters of the alphabet

Tape

Kid size paint brush

With clear tape, tape down the letters of your child's first name and other letters to the bottom of the shoebox. Pour enough sand in the shoebox to just about cover the letters. Ask your child to find the letters of their first name on the bottom of the shoebox, using the paintbrush to sweep away the sand to uncover each letter. The game can also be used to find simple words like mom, dad, cat, dog, etc.
