Grey Wolves Urban Forest School
A trip to the library
Special guests- Winnipeg Fire Fighters
August was a month full of fun, learning, and new adventures for both our Grey Wolves and White Wolves!
We started the month with a colorful Colombian Folklore Celebration, where our Wolves invited the CC group to join. Together we danced to lively Colombian music, played games, and tasted delicious Colombian food. The children were fascinated by the rhythms, movements, and flavors, and their smiles showed just how much joy the celebration brought.
Both groups spent lots of time outdoors. The Grey Wolves began their Urban School program at St. John’s, enjoying a week filled with engaging activities, snacks, nap time, and nature exploration. They dug in the soil, searched for bugs, and laughed while running after butterflies and bees with their bug catchers—even if they couldn’t quite catch them, the chase was pure fun! A heartwarming moment came when their tent broke during setup, and nearby construction workers kindly stepped in to help fix it. The children watched in amazement, learning about kindness and community through this simple yet powerful act.
Meanwhile, the White Wolves completed their final week of Forest School. They explored the woods, listened to the sounds of nature, and discovered plants, birds, and insects. Some pretended to be explorers searching for treasures, while others carefully observed how bugs moved. It was a week that sparked both curiosity and imagination.
Inside the classroom, both Grey and White Wolves enjoyed creative play. They loved knocking down block towers with cars, experimenting with drawing on the light table, and driving cars around the table. To make play even more exciting, we added a “road” with fabric, stones, and logs—encouraging imagination, sensory exploration, and problem-solving.
Another highlight of the month was our Garden Harvest. The Wolves worked together to dig in the soil, search for worms, and watch butterflies fluttering from flower to flower. With clipboards and crayons, they recorded their discoveries through drawings. The most exciting moment came when they spotted a giant spider—everyone was amazed and buzzing with excitement!
One day Firefighters came to visit and showed the kids the fire truck, which had everyone super excited. The children were eager to see and touch everything. The firefighters also demonstrated various tools and lights, and we captured plenty of pictures of the fun.
One of the firefighters even put on his full uniform and mask, showing the kids how he prepares himself during an emergency. It was a great, hands-on learning experience for everyone! To top off such a wonderful month, the children also enjoyed their first library trip and cozy summer picnics. Their eyes lit up as they discovered dinosaur books, joined storytime, and rode on toy animals at the library. Picnics in the sun were the perfect way to relax and enjoy the last warm days of summer together.
Finally, we all said goodbye to our summer staff. Their warmth, energy, and love made this summer truly special, and we will miss them dearly.
August was a magical month for our Wolves—filled with culture, nature, creativity, and kindness. Every week brought something new, and together, our Grey and White Wolves showed us that every day is an adventure when we learn and explore side by side.
