This course is the AQA 1-9 GCSE Design and Technology (8552) qualification. As part of this qualification students are required to complete four core technical Principles units:
New and emerging technologies.
Energy materials and systems.
Materials and their working properties.
Common specialist technical principles.
Students also specalise in one materials area. For students choosing DT: Product Design they will specalise in:
Unit 5b - Timber based materials specialist technical principles.
In addition to the four core units and the specialist technical principles unit, students will also complete two units based around the iterative design approach:
Unit 6 - Designing principles.
Unit 7 - Making principles.
The assessment of this course is divided into two main components, both of which are completed in year 11 of the course:
50% Non Examined Assessment (NEA)
Students complete a design and make activity in response to one of three context set by AQA. These contexts are released on June 1st, in year 10 of the course. Students start to engage with this NEA in term 6 of year 10 and complete the NEA in year 11.
50% Written examination (2 hours)
This written exam is completed in the summer of year 11 and consists of three sections:
Section A Core technical principles: A mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions assessing a breadth of technical knowledge and understanding. (20 marks)
Section B Specialist technical principles: Several short answer questions (2–5 marks) and one extended response to assess a more in depth knowledge of technical principles. (30 marks)
Section C Design and Making principles: A mixture of short answer and extended response questions. (50 marks)
