The SPH Technology Center offers AQA GCSE Design & Technology (8552) Specification) and AQA GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition (8585 Specification). Students can opt to take one of these Technology subjects into year 10 and 11. Below is some important information about the options available.
GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is a food science qualification and is not simply a cookery course. It is an exciting and creative course that develops students knowledge and understanding of food nutation, functions of ingredients and food provenance, through the development of practical cooking skills.
The assessment of this GCSE is divided into three main elements. 15% (NEA1) Food Science investigation, 35% (NEA2) Food Preparation task and the final 50% is the written examination.
This is a food science investigation in which students respond to a task set by the exam board. Students research the set topic and then design, carry out and document their own investigation and results.
The food preparation task is the second piece of NEA and focuses on students food preparation skills. Students respond to a context set by the exam board by planning preparing and presenting three final dishes. This is the students opportunity to demonstrate technical skills and it culminated in a practical examination where student cook and present their final dishes under examination conditions.
This is a 1 hour 45 minute examination that assesses students technical knowledge and understanding of five core units (Food choice, Food safety, Food provenance, Food science and Food nutrition and health). The exam is split into two sections. Section A is a multiple choice answer section and section B focuses on more extended response questions.
At SPH we offer options choices in Graphics, Product Design and Textiles. All three are the same qualification however, the difference lies in the specialist technical principles that students will study as part of the GCSE.
The GCSE is assessed in two main elements. 50% is Non-examined assessment (similar to coursework) and 50% is the final written examination. Take a look below for further information on each.
Based in the textiles suite, students specalise in knowledge and understanding of textiles based materials. For their NEA, students work with a range or modern and more traditional fabrics to design and manufacture a prototype in response to a context set by the exam board.
