In this activity, you will explore STEM careers and create a STEM Career Portfolio. Over the next three class periods, you will complete the following:
For planning purposes, I suggest completing Steps 1 and 2 during the first class period, then you have 1 class period to focus on Career Choice #1 and 1 class period to focus on Career Choice #2.
Complete the Career Readiness Skills and Career Planning Surveys below (2 google forms)
Complete the STEM Career scavenger hunt (google form) and the "Which STEM career is right for you?" Quiz below.
2. Complete the following Career Choices google form. There is a spot for you to upload the screenshot from the quiz above in the form.
For the TWO careers you are interested in/looking at, complete the following tasks. Record your findings for the STEM career in a digital portfolio (Google slides, Google Docs or other format of your choosing):
(10 pts) Educational/training requirements and costs
Identify various options for attaining the appropriate educational/training requirements (ex. Technical school, trade school, Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Graduate Degree, Professional Degree, etc.)
Proposed time frame for each path
Costs & Loan & Debt Repayment: Consider costs of various potential programs, available loans, and debt repayment options within career choice.
Identify strategies for reducing overall costs of post-secondary education.
(4 pts) Identify transferable skills in career choices and design alternative career plans based on those skills. (4 pts)
Identify skills that are important to both your career choices.
Identify career alternative options that use the same skills as listed above.
(8 pts) Use online resources to examine licensing, certification, and credentialing requirements at the local, state, and national levels to maintain compliance with industry requirements in areas of career interest
Identify licensing and/or certification requirements.
Identify any additional licensing, certification, or credentials that could help career advancement that are common within career choice.
Identify any requirements for continuing education in the chosen career field.
Identify any additional safety or industry practices common with the chosen career field. (For example, OSHA, Right to Know, non-compete agreement, patent ownership, etc.)
(6 pts) Choose 1 of the following areas to investigate:
1. Analyze how the economic, social, and political conditions of a time period affect the labor market for chosen career fields.
Provide data to show how the career market for the chosen field has changed over time.
Provide projection data on the future career market for the chosen field.
Identify 1 -2 political, social, or economical factors that affected the career market changes listed above.
2. Complete an analysis of underrepresented groups in the chosen career field.
Provide data to show relative representation of women in the chosen career both at entry level and upper level positions.
Provide data to show relative representation of Black, Indigenous, or people of color in the chosen career both at entry level and upper level positions.
Provide a brief description of efforts to increase representation of underrepresented groups in the chosen career field.
(10 pts) Based on your research about the two careers, complete a reflection about what you have learned in the process. Consider the following:
How has your knowledge and understanding of different possible STEM careers changed?
After completing this research, are you more likely to or less likely to pursue a career in a STEM field?
Do you feel there is a fair representation of all groups in the career fields you researched? Why or why not?
What do you think could be done better or more of to encourage more students to pursue STEM careers?
