Child Development I
Course Syllabus
Course Description:
The program draws on aspects of the social and biological sciences. The Child Development 1
course will stress responsibility in parenthood as well as guides for care during the prenatal
period, infancy, and early childhood. A thorough study of children’s physical, intellectual,
emotional and social development will be discussed in various stages. Students will gain a
thorough understanding of conception and prenatal development as well as the labor and
delivery process. Special topics will include child abuse and trauma, childcare options,
communicating with children, importance of play, and food and nutrition.
Rationale: The purpose of this course is to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills
to enhance parent child/caregiver-child relations. Students will develop the knowledge and skills
to solve problems based upon the developmental needs of children and make decisions that
support the sound physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual development of children.
Scope and Sequence:
Unit 1: Children and Parenting
Unit 2: Pregnancy and Child Birth
Unit 3: The Baby’s First Year
Unit 4: The Child from One to Three
Unit 7: Careers in Child Development
Classroom Expectations:

Supplies Needed
Every day you should bring a pen or pencil, a notebook. You may want a folder to keep
handouts, etc. in. Each student should take notes in class when new information is being given.
Test information is based on textbook readings, written notes, handouts, worksheets, etc.
Tardy
● Considered tardy if you enter the room after the bell rings
● 15mins after bell – students are required to check in with the office to receive a slip. If
they do not have a slip they will be marked as absent.
Book Checkout
Books will be available to use during class time. If you need to take a book home you must
check on out and return by the end of the semester or you will be fined.
Late Work
All daily work will be due the day of the chapter test. If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to
make arrangements with the teacher to get work turned in. Work turned in after the test day will
be docked 50%. No assignments will be accepted outside of the quarter they are assigned.
Leaving the Classroom
You will need to sign out when leaving the classroom. When returning to the room you need to
sign back in.
Electronics
1. No need to have electronics out unless needed for class assignments.
2. All assignments will need to be handwritten unless otherwise stated. To receive credit on
chapter vocab, it must be handwritten – no exceptions!
Assessments:
Assessments will be done in a variety of ways. Tests, quizzes and projects will all be used in the
classroom to assess the students' learning. Homework is not regularly given unless a student is
unable to finish the work in the class time given. All assignments must be handwritten unless
otherwise stated. Typed vocab and chapter questions will not be accepted. Use your time
wisely and you should be able to complete most work in class!
Real Care Babies:
▪ There will be 2 options for completing this assignment
▪ Option 1: Take home RealCare Baby simulator for 24 hours. 24 hours must
occur during the weekend as the babies are not allowed in school. Students
choosing this option must turn in a signed permission slip from parent/guardian
before they can take a baby. “Daycare” hours are given to students who are
working or participating in sports during the 24 hours.
▪ Optional opportunity to take baby for 48 hours for extra credit
▪ Option 2: Complete a research project in place of taking a baby home. Students
choosing this option will need to get the information sheet from Mrs. Johnson.
▪ **Students have until the end of the semester to complete either option**
Academic Dishonesty:
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in the classroom. The student will receive 0 points if
the assignment is found to have been plagiarized. If the student is found to be cheating on a test
or assignment, no credit will be given.
Assessments ~ 50%
Daily Assignments ~ 40%
Final Exam ~ 10% of Final Grade
