2026 Competitions
Our State is offering a NEW Fall Focus that will take place at Western Dakota Technical College October 21st and Lake Area Technical College October 28th, to help better prepare for the State Conference.
The State Conference will take place April 9-10 at Mitchell Technical College. Students who place first at the State Conference will be offered the opportunity to represent our State at the National Leadership & Skills Conference to compete with other winners from their competition around the Nation.
NLSC will take place June 1-5 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Our Chapter attended the 2025 NLSC held in Atlanta, GA June 23-28th. Nevaeh Horstmann achieved 1st place with her Welding Sculpture "There's Always One" during the State Conference held at Mitchell Tech April 10-11, giving her the opportunity to represent SHS and South Dakota at NLSC. Nevaeh's sculpture showcases her dedication, creativity, & skills. She earned 22nd place out of 49.
I was privileged enough to attend the 2024 NLSC in Atlanta, Georgia with Welding/Drafting Instructor Kristi McCoy and her group of State Champions; Kaleb Ranek, Kyler Pietzyk, Dylan Wiegert, Hudson Ewert, and Caden Langenfeld. Kaleb, Hudson, & Caden competed in the team Welding Fabrication contest, Kyler competed in Drafting, and Dylan competed in Welding sculpture. While none of the boys were able to step on the podium, it was such a memorable experience being able to witness how excited and competitive the students get, while making friends around the nation.
My Goal as SkillsUSA Advisor
Our chapter has been involved in SkillsUSA since 2017 and was developed by Kristi McCoy. As SHSs new SkillsUSA Advisor starting in Fall of 2024, I plan to continue encouraging involvement in the Welding and Drafting competitions as well as introduce the opportunity to expand into the Automotive competitions. SkillsUSA offers 115 skilled and leadership competitions. I hope to encourage other CTE teachers within the district to offer further competition opportunities to our students at SHS.
