The key to successful performance is the identification and isolation of technical challenges presented in a piece of music.

PRACTICE TIPS

In order to be a contributing member of an orchestra family, you need to practice enough to overcome the technical challenges presented in our repertoire!

There are several practice strategies below to help you at home!

1. Tune your instrument daily. Tuner link here. If you are consistent about the tuning of your instrument, you can create more accurate muscle memory while playing. The free tuning app recommended for your phone or IPAD: InsTuner

2. Use a metronome to help you keep a steady beat while you practice. The orchestra will not wait for you to play the hard spot slower! Free metronome app: ProMetronome. Under settings, choose "13" for vocal counting.

3. Practice in small sections and try to play those sections at least 5 times in a row correctly. Just because you made one free throw, that does not mean you are a pro basketball player. The best players can do the hard stuff every time they try!

4. Pay close attention to your posture & position. Check your left hand shape, bow hold and body posture. No sense in hurting yourself over something you are trying to enjoy. Bad posture and position can make it harder to play AND be potentially damaging to your body!

5. Don't get frustrated! If you're having difficulties, practice slowly and try to make a beautiful sound. You'll get there - be patient!

6. Consistent practice over time is ESSENTIAL to your improvement. Waiting to the last minute to record a performance video will cause much frustration!
