We are excited to share the relaunch of the District 5 Orchestra Private Lessons Program, offering students an enriching opportunity to grow as musicians with personalized instruction.
Private lessons can be highly beneficial for all students! The private lesson setting offers flexibility for the teacher to completely customize the learning experience to each student's particular needs and ability level. This is a task that can be extremely difficult in the large group orchestra setting.
Private lessons are especially recommended for students who need help with particular skills that they may be struggling with in the large group classroom, like rhythm, note-reading, and techniques. Lessons are also very helpful for students who may be advancing quickly and want an extra challenge beyond what the large group classroom is able to provide on a regular basis. These students may have a particular passion for the arts and may participate in musical ensembles outside of school.
Parents, you will be able to schedule a time that works for you. You can choose from student teachers (high schoolers who are taking private lessons) and professional teachers. Each teacher has been hand-selected and screened, and they are committed to the D5 orchestra program. Professional teachers set their own pricing levels. High school students will charge $10 per 30-minute lesson, and are available only to 6th and 7th graders. All lessons will be monitored by D5 Orchestra staff members. Bios for professional-level teachers are available on the Byrnes orchestra website (https://sites.google.com/spart5.net/byrnes-orchestra/home) or at the request of your child’s orchestra teacher.
A $25 commitment fee is due at the first lesson. This should be in cash or a check made out to Byrnes Freshman Academy and is separate from the payment to your private teacher.
Private Lessons hosted by District 5 will be held at one of our schools.
There are 3 levels of private lessons: Professional, Pre-professional, and Student Teachers.
A District 5 employee will supervise the lessons program each week.
“Professional teachers” have earned a degree in music performance or music education and have vast performance experience; “Pre-professional teachers” have performance experience and a history of excellent playing, but may not have pursued a music degree; “Student teachers” are current Byrnes High musicians that are currently studying with a professional teacher and have demonstrated excellent musical ability, as well as mature, responsible character in and out of their orchestra classroom. (Student teachers must submit a student teacher recommendation form to be considered for a teaching position with the D5 Orchestra Private Lesson Program.)
Lessons must be registered and scheduled through the D5 Orchestra website.
Rates and length of lessons may vary between Professional and Pre-Professional teachers.
Student teachers (BHS students) may not teach students beyond 7th grade. Mrs. Grant, along with the other orchestra teachers, will pair student teachers with students.
Teachers may request students to purchase supplemental materials, such as etude and solo books.
Students are expected to bring their own equipment to the lessons unless prior arrangements have been made (basses are available on site to be used by bass students).
Students are expected to complete assignments (PRACTICE) between lessons. Teachers will communicate how much time is expected.
Lessons will follow the school calendar. If school is cancelled, lessons will be cancelled. Some teachers may be willing to teach virtual lessons online. Inquire with the specific teacher.
Lesson fees are due monthly and must be paid at the first lesson of each month. Payments should be paid directly to the teacher, and the teacher will provide a receipt. Cancellations must be made with at least 24 hours' notice to receive credit towards the following month.
Students must arrive and depart within 15 minutes of their lesson time. (There will not be supervision of students beyond those times unless arranged with the host D5 employee.)
D5 Orchestra Private Lesson Program students may have the option to continue summer lessons.
Safety and health precautions will be followed per District 5 guidelines.
