Settimana Sei, Learn and Play!
Helpful Hints for Spelling:
Spelling is about practising those words that we get stuck on all the time.
It is helpful to become more familiar with different sound ‘chunks’ (like ai, igh, sh, er...) so that your sounding out can be more effective when trying to spell tricky words.
Some words have irregular spelling patterns so you will need take a photo in your mind and write it over and over to make sure it sticks in your memory.
Each week, ask an adult to help you choose 5 words from your writing that you need to learn to spell. Find two minutes every day to do LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK with your words and have someone quiz you at the end of the week.
Then during your spelling time, complete the focus activity below.
Print (or copy onto a piece of paper) and cut the list of words. Read each word and sort it based on the way that the long e sound is spelt. Can you find a toy or object around your house to add to each pile, just like in the picture? Once you have sorted the words, add any other words you can think of - try to think of at least 2 more for each - and then record as many words as you can on the chart below.
Your challenge then is to write a sentence/paragraph that includes as many of these long e words as you can. It can be as silly or as sensible as you want! For example:
The green bee and the flea went to see if the could eat the tree.

Read Kate's Cake. After you have read it once, read again and be a "Long A" detective. Underline all the "long a" words using different colours to show the different letter patterns that make that sound. Then write the words under the correct flaps, just like the photo!
Have a look at your lists. What do you notice?
During the week go on a word hunt. Write your discoveries on the sheet provided.
Then during your spelling time, complete the focus activity below.
Long vowels say their name. After watching the video about some of the most common ways to spell the long a sound, read the story about long a. Can you see or hear the words that have a long a sound? Print off the chart below and add the words you find in the story. Can you think of any other words to include on the chart? Ask an adult to help you write the words you think of in the correct spot.

What Does the Fox Say?
Cut out cards and place in a pile upside down. Each player takes a turn drawing a card. If you can read the word on the card, fill in the blend, or come up with a word that begins with that blend, then you can keep it! Keep playing until all cards are gone or Fox says it's game over.
Challenge: Use 5 of the words from the game to write a story!
Then during your spelling time, complete the focus activity below.
Make your own blender!
Add the different ingredients (consonant blend droplet cards) to your "blender" (old cereal box, jug, container), turn on and blend, then pour out one blend. Write a list of all the words can you think of that start with this blend.
Then during your spelling time, complete the focus activity below.
Watch this video to learn more about blends! Then play a game of 'Finger Twist Up' up to practise using these blends. Choose any of the blend game boards to play. Write the different words that you make. Can you put them in a sentence?
