Did you know Menchaca has a full-time nurse on campus?

It's true! Nurses Heather is on campus every day to take care of our littlest Cardinals! Meet our Menchaca nurse here.

Your school nurse does more than just handout ice packs and bandages.... Nurse Heather intervenes with actual and potential health problems including providing first aid, emergency care and assessment, and planning for the management of chronic conditions (such as asthma or diabetes). In addition, wellness promotion, preventive services, and staff, student, and parent education complement the provision of care coordination services. These services are also designed to ensure access and/or referrals to the medical home or private healthcare provider. Health services connect school staff, students, families, community and healthcare providers to promote the health care of students and a healthy and safe school environment. School health services actively collaborate with school and community support services to increase the ability of students and families to adapt to health and social stressors, such as chronic health conditions or social and economic barriers to health, and to be able to manage these stressors and advocate for their own health and learning needs.

! Student Illness (All Grade Levels) !

When your child is ill, please contact the school to let us know he or she will not be attending that day. It is important to remember that schools are required to exclude students with certain illnesses from school for periods of time as identified in state rules. For example, if your child has a fever over 100 degrees, he or she must stay out of school until fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications. In addition, students with diarrheal illnesses must stay home until they are diarrhea-free without diarrhea-suppressing medications for at least 24 hours. A full list of conditions for which the school must exclude children can be obtained from the school nurse.

If a student becomes ill during the school day, he or she must receive permission from the teacher before reporting to the school nurse. If the nurse determines that the child should go home, the nurse will contact the parent.

The district is also required to report certain contagious (communicable) diseases or illnesses to the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) or our local/regional health authority. The school nurse can provide information from TDSHS on these notifiable conditions.

Contact the school nurse if you have questions or if you are concerned about whether or not your child should stay home. Menchaca school nurses can be reached at 210-882-1610

Vaccine Information

In Texas, a student shall show acceptable documentation of vaccination before entering, attending, or transferring to a childcare facility or public or private elementary or secondary school. Vaccine requirements are determined by the state legislature and set by the Texas Department of State Health Services, in conjunction with the Texas Education Agency. More information on the required immunizations for K-12th graders in Texas can be found here. Check with your child’s doctor or school nurse to get an updated vaccination record for your child.

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child

At Menchaca, our nurses strive to follow the the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) approach to education. The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model is CDC’s framework for addressing health in schools. The WSCC model is student-centered and emphasizes the role of the community in supporting the school, the connections between health and academic achievement and the importance of evidence-based school policies and practices. There are 10 components of this model including '

  • Physical education and physical activity.

  • Nutrition environment and services.

  • Health education.

  • Social and emotional climate.

  • Physical environment.

  • Health services.

  • Counseling, psychological and social services.

  • Employee wellness.

  • Community involvement.

  • Family engagement.

For more information from the CDC on this model, please visit this page.

More information on each event can be found here.

Resources

Your school nurses have access to numerous resources to help your child reduce absences and succeed in school. Whether it be clothing, coats, shoes or access to medical care such as vision exams and dentists, the Menchaca nurses can help our Southside families. Please reach out to us to help all of our Cardinals be their best selves! We get frequent donations of clothing items through community partners and work closely with community agencies to make sure medical needs can be met. Whether your child attends Menchaca or another school in Southside, please reach out if you need assistance.
