In reading, we follow the Reader’s Workshop model. The following is a typical schedule that we follow:
Mini Lesson – (10 minutes)
During this lesson I will explain and show a reading strategy using a book that we are reading in class.
Independent Reading – (about 45 minutes)
The students will practice the skill taught today as well as previous skills taught during their independent reading. Students will have books that are just right for them. During the time while students are reading, I will be conferencing with students to provide one on one instruction and discussions to help meet your child’s individual reading needs.
At the beginning of the year, students will work entirely on their own practicing skills during this time. As the students become more proficient, we will gradually move into group work where the students will work in small groups reading the same book and discussing elements of the book.
Share – (5 minutes)
At this time we will discuss how the students applied the newly learned skill, what went well, and what didn’t.
