According to the Southington curriculum, homework in third grade should between 10-20 minutes per day. Typically the students will have a cursive practice paper and a math paper for homework. If you find that the directions on the math homework are confusing and your child does not understand what to do, please send it in with a note and I’ll explain it in the morning.
Your child is required to write down homework assignments in his or her planner daily. The planner and home folder should come back to school everyday. Please make sure your child has completed all assignments daily and sign the bottom of the planner.
Another important part of homework is reading. It is suggested by the district that students in third grade spend 100 minutes per week on independent reading with “just right” books. Part of homework will be to read at least 15-20 minutes every night. The best thing that your child can do with his or her free time is read. This could become a good nighttime routine to do before bed and you could even read with your child if you like.
From time to time, I will ask the students to study for science and or social studies. I will typically tell students a week in advance for these tests. We will go over different ways to study in school, but your guidance and help at home will be necessary since this is the first year they will be required to memorize science and social studies definitions.
