English Language Arts Rangefinding Committee Members

English Language Arts Rangefinding Committee Members

    • The Ohio Department of Education is now accepting applications for participants to serve on range-finding committees for English language arts (ELA). Ohio’s educators, content specialists, and other stakeholders play a vital role in creating valid and reliable assessments by serving on these committees.

    • Committees are specific to each Ohio’s state test in ELA (e.g., Ohio’s State Test in Grade 5 ELA or ELA II End-of-Course Test). Ohio educators who serve as assessment committee members represent the diversity of Ohio’s schools and districts: public, nonpublic, career technical, urban, suburban, and rural. Some may work in higher education or serve in school districts as curriculum specialists or administrators, but the majority of the committee members are classroom teachers with varied years of teaching experience in the appropriate grade levels and areas of study.

    • These ELA range-finding committees will convene for a limited series of virtual meetings. They are not ongoing committees. Meetings will be held in January-February 2022 only but will span several days. After you apply to participate on one of the committees, you will be able to indicate which dates you are available to serve. Submit applications by 11 p.m. EST on Sunday, October 31, 2021. Selected applicants will receive notification by the week of November 22, 2021. Link to application.

    • The dates for each of the grade-level meetings are listed below.

Grade Level Meeting Dates

Grade 3, Part 1 -- Feb. 9 - 11, 2022

Grade 3, Part 2 -- Feb. 14 - 16, 2022

Grade 4 -- Jan. 18 - 21, 2022

Grade 5 -- Jan. 31 - Feb. 4, 2022

Grade 6 -- Jan. 24 - 27, 2022

Grade 7, Part 1 -- Jan. 18 - 21, 2022

Grade 7, Part 2 -- Feb. 14 - 16, 2022

Grade 8 -- Feb. 7 - 11, 2022

High School (ELA II), Part 1 -- Jan. 24 - 28, 2022

High School (ELA II), Part 2 -- Jan. 31 - Feb. 4, 2022

High School (ELA II), Part 3 -- Feb. 17 - 18, 2022

These meetings will be held virtually.

Please note the following:

  • All eligible meeting participants will have the cost of substitute teachers directly reimbursed to school districts. Participants will receive reimbursement guidelines at the meeting.

  • These meetings require participants’ full attention and engagement as if it was an in-person meeting. The materials discussed will be secure. Therefore, please be sure you have a secure location in which to work where no one else will see or hear the meeting or the meeting materials and you will be uninterrupted.

  • Participants will receive certificates from The Ohio Department of Education, Office of Assessment, that can be used for LPDC credit approximately 4-6 weeks after the meetings are completed.

Those who are interested in participating on one of the ELA Range-finding committees should complete this application.

Applicants should describe their experience in education, including expertise with Ohio’s Learning Standards in English language arts. Please be sure to identify grade level choice, ELA as the content area assignment, and range-finding as the committee preference. Submit applications by 11 p.m. EST on Sunday, October 31, 2021. Selected applicants will receive notification by the week of November 22, 2021.

Please be sure to include an active email address for notifications. Applications MUST BE FULLY COMPLETED to be considered for participation on a committee.

Once we have received your completed application, we will send you a link to indicate your availability. Please indicate at least two days that you are able to attend. Having all committee members attend the entire meeting allows for the best personal experience and the most consistent process, however, we understand that being away from the classroom for several days is not always possible or beneficial to your students.

Ohio Writing Test Pilot Extended to December 17, 2021

Online Writing Test Pilot – Extended to December 17

The Ohio Department of Education invites school districts to participate in the voluntary Online Writing Pilot. To include as many participants as possible, the pilot window has been extended to December 17, 2021. As many as an entire classroom or building or as few as a small group of students can be registered to participate. Participation helps to ensure the reliability and high quality of writing items and provides schools and students with an opportunity to be better prepared for upcoming test administrations.

The only participation requirement for the pilot is that students must be preidentified in TIDE in advance of starting the pilot assessment. The student’s current enrolled grade is used to determine the test eligibility in the test delivery system. Students take the test of the previous year's enrolled grade, so students in grades 4-8 and high school are encouraged to participate. For example, new sixth graders in fall 2021 will take the fifth-grade Writing Pilot. Students have up to one hour for each test. The pilot is to test the writing questions, not the students. Because of this, student results will not be released to the field.

The online pilot is conducted using the same testing systems used for Ohio’s State Tests (TIDE, Secure Browser, TA Interface) and will run through December 17, 2021. No paper forms will be available.

Additional information for administering the pilot is posted to the portal. If you have any questions about this opportunity, please contact the Ohio Help Desk.

Early Reporting of Certain Ohio State Tests

In response to district and stakeholder feedback, the Ohio Department of Education is announcing early reporting of certain Ohio State Tests results for spring 2022.

The Department and Cambium Assessment have worked to accelerate the timeline for reporting preliminary results for mathematics, science and social studies tests administered online. These results will be available in the Centralized Reporting System (CRS) beginning May 10.

With early reporting, districts have the benefit of receiving actionable data before the end of the school year. This can aid in decision-making for graduation, summer testing notification and intervention programs, evaluation of student progress and planning for the following school year.

Be aware that aggregate test results, such as those for class, school, district and state, will reflect only currently reported results. These results will update throughout the spring reporting window as other results become available.

Preliminary results for mathematics, science and social studies paper tests will be accessible in CRS June 20.

Due to the scoring process of writing items on the English language arts assessments, the preliminary results of these tests will be reported as follows:

  • Grade 3 English language arts online and paper tests: June 15

  • Grades 4 through high school English language arts online and paper tests: June 20

The Department will release late batch and breach test results June 24.

As a reminder, scores may change after initial release for many reasons, including rescores and appeals. Districts handle reporting final data to the Department using the Education Management Information System (EMIS). For these reasons, score data in CRS should be considered preliminary just as they have been in previous years.

The Department will continue to evaluate early reporting of preliminary test results to determine future release schedules.

For questions about the reporting of test results, contact statetests@education.ohio.gov.

Public Comment on Student Interactions with Peace Officers Model Curriculum

Ohio law requires city, local, exempted village and joint vocational school districts to provide instruction on student interactions with peace officers within at least one course required for high school graduation. The first group of students expected to receive this instruction will be students entering grade 9 for the first time on or after July 1, 2022. Districts and schools determine locally which graduation courses include this instruction and the instructional time needed to provide the instruction established in this model curriculum.

The Ohio Department of Education, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, developed a draft model curriculum for instruction in grades 9-12 on proper interactions with peace officers. The term peace officers is broadly defined to include many types of law enforcement officers. The draft of this model curriculum was developed in collaboration with advisory and working groups consisting of teachers, school administrators, law enforcement, driver education staff, legal rights groups and community members.

The model curriculum for student interactions with peace officers shall cover the following content:

  • Proper interactions between peace officers and civilians;

  • Information on which individuals are peace officers and their duties and responsibilities;

  • Questioning and detention laws, including any that require proof of identity and consequences for failure to comply with the laws;

  • A person’s rights during an interaction with a peace officer;

  • Demonstrations and role-playing in a classroom setting to allow a better understanding of how interactions between officers and civilians can and should unfold.

The Ohio Department of Education is seeking public comment on the current draft of the Student Interactions with Peace Officers Model Curriculum until 4 p.m. on March 28. The education community and public are invited to provide suggestions for improving the model curriculum through a public comment survey. All feedback will be reviewed and considered as the next draft of the model curriculum is prepared.

Annually, the Department partners with the Ohio Association of Career-Technical Educators to host a Career Connections Conference. This year’s conference is planned for July 27, 2022 at the Hilton Columbus-Easton. Save the date and consider applying to present and host a conference session.

The Career Connections conference is an opportunity for educators to network and share ideas about Career Connections work happening throughout the state. During this event, presentations focus on career advising with OhioMeansJobs or other systems, business advisory councils, student success plans, and developing career pathways. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from education experts in the field and will leave with innovative ideas and resources for kicking off the school year. Submit a proposal to present here.

The Career Connections conference takes place during the 2022 Ohio Career-Technical Education Innovation and Impact Conference. Register here to attend the full conference July 25-27, 2022.

Career Connections offer practical ways for teachers, school counselors, families, and community members to show students, as early as kindergarten, the types of careers possible for them. Career Connections are designed to support the whole child through intentional career advising practices.

Ohio Lottery's Partner in Education Program Shines a Light on Teachers and Students

The Ohio Lottery’s Partners in Education program celebrates both teachers and students who work hard in the classroom and their communities. During the academic school year, the Ohio Lottery accepts statewide nominations of outstanding teachers and students. Every month, the Ohio Lottery holds a random drawing of all nominees and awards a Teacher of the Month and an Academic All Star (student) in each of the Ohio Lottery’s nine regions. Click HERE to submit a nomination today.

Award recipients receive Partners in Education merchandise, a gift card, and certificate. The Ohio Lottery’s website and social media channels also highlight the awardees.

Every May, the Ohio Lottery holds a drawing that includes all the schools that took part in the program and awards a School of the Year. The School of the Year receives a gift card, trophy, and autographed team merchandise from major and minor league sports teams across Ohio. Schools can use the merchandise for fundraising efforts.

The Partners in Education program runs every academic school year, from September to May. Anyone can nominate a deserving Ohio teacher or student through the Ohio Lottery’s website. It’s fast, free, and easy to submit an online nomination. This video shows how to submit a nomination. Contact Molly Fanta with questions about Partners in Education at (216) 774-5739.
