Resource Created for Ohio Students to Learn Pathways to Jobs, Faster
On May 1st, Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted launched a new resource that provides information to students, parents, and teachers about the different career pathways available to high schoolers. The “Find Your Career Pathway” video and toolkit aim to guide students in their educational journey to land a successful career right here in Ohio.
The resource helps encourage Ohio students, parents, and schools to start conversations earlier about the best pathway to a successful career in Ohio.
The video features five students from around the state sharing their experiences in each pathway. The highlighted pathways include:
Career Technical Education - provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge, and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners.
Pre-Apprenticeships - teaches entry level technical and job-readiness skills for an apprentice occupation to prepare students for a formal Registered Apprenticeship training program upon graduation.
College Credit Plus - helps students earn college and high school credits simultaneously by taking college courses from local colleges or universities while in high school.
Industry-Recognized Credentials- demonstrates the knowledge and skills students gain through hands-on learning in a specific job or industry.
In addition to the video, an accompanying toolkit was developed to share additional information on the various pathways and other resources that can help students and families learn more about each.

The Data Driven Business Advisory Council - Best Practices for collecting data to support plans
The Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning Unit and Office of Graduate Success at the Ohio Department of Education have collaborated to create a resource that crosswalks the STEM/STEAM Education Attributes with Bustiness Advisory Council (BAC) Quality Practices: The Integral Role of Business Advisory Councils (BACs) in STEM/STEAM Education. The purpose of this document is to provide clarity and alignment between the expectations of high performing Business Advisory Councils (BACs) as measured by the BAC Quality Practices framework and STEM best practices as outlined in the STEM and STEAM Designation Rubric. There is a crosswalk of how BAC Quality Practices align to the STEM/STEAM rubric attributes, and a crosswalk of how the STEM/STEAM rubric attributes align to the BAC Quality Practices. The purpose of including both perspectives is so that individuals and organizations that come from one background can learn about the alignment from the other background and optimize transparency. Essentially, this document shows that if STEM practices are implemented authentically, the BAC Quality Practices are met, and if a BAC implements the highest quality practices, this will advance STEM practices as well.
Access the document on the STEM Resources webpage.

The Ohio Standards for School Counselors were revised in February 2023?
In December, 2022, the State Board of Education approved additional language to the standards to conform with HB 110 of the 134th General Assembly. (See Standard 2.3.b).
The revision, regarding career-technical education credit transfer is on page 12 of the Ohio Standards for School Counselors?

National Scholars Program
Please join us for our last school counselor meet up for this year on May 11th at 11:00 AM. We will be joined by Libuse Binder (Lee-ba-shay), who is working with ODE and ODHE to assess the overall outreach plan for College Credit Plus to help ensure that all students have access to the opportunities this program offers. She is working with us as part of our partnership with the College in the High School Alliance (CHSA). We see this project as a chance to give us the ability to set a more nuanced understanding of the needs of the broadest range of underrepresented students possible, including those who haven’t really featured in the dual enrollment conversation to date. Libuse will give a brief overview of the project to date and then ask for your feedback and ideas about how to increase opportunity and access to CCP for all of our students. There will also be an opportunity to offer more feedback in a follow-up survey from Libuse that I will be sending around after the meeting.

The U.S. Department of Education Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education announced the launch of the Career Z Challenge, a multi-phase prize competition to expand high school student access to high-quality work-based learning (WBL) that will prepare them to be contributing members of today’s workforce and propel them into successful careers of the future.
The Career Z Challenge supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s Raise the Bar: Unlocking Career Success initiative championed by the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, and Commerce.
Through this Challenge, the Department invites Perkins eligible schools, districts, and consortiums to share their ideas for creating or enhancing work-based learning opportunities in career and technical education (CTE) programs through the expansion of WBL ecosystems. Eligible entrants will engage collaborative ecosystems of educators, businesses, industries, workforce processionals, and community stakeholders to provide students interconnected and expansive career development opportunities and experiences across grades 9 - 12. Semi-finalists and finalists will be eligible to receive targeted technical assistance including professional development support, webinars and training, participation in a community of practice (CoP), as well as a portion of a $2.5 million prize pool.
The lessons learned from this challenge will inform resources and models that will foster growth and expansion of high-quality, sustainable WBL experiences for students nationwide. I hope you will support the challenge in one or more of these ways:
Invite eligible schools in your state to submit their innovative ideas by May 24, 2023.
Join the challenge CoP and encourage other members of your state’s WBL ecosystem to do the same. Sign up at com.
