Objective:
Create a compelling portrait that captures your subject looking directly into the camera lens, using a shallow depth of field to emphasize emotion and focus. You will turn in a proofsheet with 30 images and 4 final edited images all Black and White Square Format. Plus 2 Glitch images from your non-final edits.
Assignment Description:
For this project, you will photograph a single subject with a shallow depth of field (wide aperture). Your goal is to create an intimate, engaging portrait where the subject makes direct eye contact with the viewer. The background should be blurred to isolate your subject and direct attention to their eyes and expression.
Requirements:
Aperture: f/1.4 to f/4 (depending on your lens)
Subject must be looking directly into the camera lens
Background should be out of focus (bokeh effect)
Use natural or controlled lighting to enhance the subject’s features
Capture emotion or mood through expression, lighting, and composition
Submit 3 final edited portraits showing intentional focus and style
Technical Tips:
Focus precisely on the eyes — this is critical in shallow depth of field portraits.
Keep a comfortable distance from your subject; closer distances exaggerate the background blur.
Watch your background—avoid distractions or bright areas that draw the eye away.
You will turn in 2 from this assignment from two photos that you didn't turn in for you final images.
