2. Activity (Water and Hexane Tube)

Part I: Test Tube Inversion

• Complete the following using your test tube:
  1. Two full squirts of water (H2O).
  2. Two full squirts of hexane (C6H14).
  3. Observe. Cap with thumb/paper. Invert a few times. Observe.
  4. Dash of blue copper (II) Sulfide (CuS).
  5. Observe. Cap with thumb/paper. Invert a few times. Observe.
  6. Using tweezers add 1 piece of iodine (I2).
  7. Observe. Cap with thumb & paper. Invert several times. Observe.
  8. Take a picture of your tube and video of you inverting your tube.

Part III: Mixture Hypothesis

1. How did the four chemicals (H2O, C6H14, CuS , I2) organize themselves?

9. Activity (Sand Analysis)

Part I: Castle Sand

• Label one cup "Castle Sand" with a sharpie. Grab a small ball of brown sand and place it in your cup. Play with it by pulling it apart, squeezing it, etc. Add a few drops of water to the sand and notice what happens. Describe your observations in your notes.

Part II: Blue Sand

• Label one cup "Blue Sand" with a sharpie. Divide the cup in thirds with a pen. Fill to 1/3 mark with blue sand and to 2/3 mark with water. Stir with your spoon. Scoop out some sand with your hand. Describe your observations in your notes.

Part III: Structure Analysis

• Shown below are the interior structure of "Brown" and "Blue" sand. Hypothesize a possible identify for the red "?" in each sand. Draw a hypothetical completed structure for each in your notes on a whiteboard along with a short explanation.

25. Activity (Molarity)

• Prepare 100 mL of a 1M solution of CuSO4 in the Erlenmeyer flask. Use the steps below:
  1. Determine how many moles are in the solution. Recall: M = mol/L
  2. Derermine how many grams are in those moles using a convesion.
  3. Measure those grams using a scale and add them to the empty flask
  4. Fill up to the 100mL mark with water (Tap is fine).
  5. Stir with glass rod and swirle for a long time.
  6. Label flask and let sit for tomorrow.

Part I: Dilution

1. Label 4 your test tubes 1M, 0.5M, 0.25M, 0.125M
2. Using your 1M solution as the stock solution, create samples of the 4 solutions above such that each tube is 1/2 full.
