A Guide to Happiness: Life, Family, and BakingWhat’s a more comforting feeling than being surrounded by your loved ones? What’s a more comforting scent than the smell of fresh pastries brewing  in the oven? Well, I’m here to tell you the answer. My mother, Melissa Perez, knows how to provide this feeling better than anyone. While being a first grade teacher, she also runs a small baking business on top of being a full time mother. First and foremost, my mother’s baking business is something she is very passionate about. She's been passionate about baking since her childhood. Now, let’s look at how her childhood has made such a passion in her life.Melissa was born on October 27th, 1985 and named Melissa Ochoa. She has one sibling named Maritza Ochoa. Melissa was called Meli and her sister Martiza was called Mari. Melissa was only three years old when her mother passed at the age of 27 in 1988. Her father was not around, so her grandparents, Haydee Garica Dorta and Luis Garcia, took her in after her mother sadly passed away because of cancer. When Meli was with her grandparents, they taught her how to cook, clean, and so much more. She is extremely grateful for everything they have done for her, But the real reason behind why she has a huge passion for baking is her grandfather, Luis aka Pipo. Pipo taught her how to cook so many things like arroz con frijoles, pan con bistec, arroz con leche, pastelitos de queso, pastelitos de jamón, and so much more amazing cuban dishes and desserts. She told me that she loved learning new recipes and that she would even create new recipes to make things even better. She also told me she hopes the recipes she has created as a child stay in our family for generations to come.
