SHS ELA Summer Reading Objectives
Facilitate activities that prevent summer learning loss of ELA skills.
Provide students with accessible reading options that encourage student interest in reading.
Prepare students for upcoming course work, inclusive of content and skills.
Promote student choice through optional reading that utilizes the annual Nutmeg Award list while also boosting community experience surrounding the celebration of reading.
Expose students to challenging literary texts that are in alignment AP English texts and coursework.
Somers High School students are encouraged to choose one book from the 2026 High School Nutmeg Award Nominees List to read this summer. Students are not required to produce anything while they read this summer. Upon returning to school, students who have read a Nutmeg Nominee book will be invited to a "Book Breakfast" during which students will compare, contrast and discuss the Nutmeg books they read. Please complete and submit the form below once you have completed reading a Nutmeg Nominee book if you'd like to participate in the "Book Breakfast".

Nutmeg Books
This well-respected list of books which is sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians. The selection committee is composed of children's librarians and school library-media specialists who are members of these two organizations as well as students who have read 60-80 books from which the selection is made. According to their website, All books nominated for the Nutmeg Intermediate, Middle School, and High School Awards must be:
works of fiction, with appeal for readers in grades 4-6 , 7-8 or 9-12;
must be copyrighted in the United States within the five (5) years preceding and including the year of the award;
currently in print, and available in paperback;
well-written, with strong characterization, vivid setting, striking language, a well-constructed plot, and plausible conclusion.
