Important Things To Remember!

Preschool Info Quick Sheet!

Clothing:

Please send your child in with a spare set of clothing (including socks) on the first day so that we can keep this in their cubby (you never know when there will be a spill!) Also, if your child is not fully potty trained, we ask that you send in pull-ups/diapers and wipes so that we can ensure your child is comfortable during their time at school. If girls are dressed in dresses or skirts, please remember to have bloomers or shorts on underneath. Remember to dress your child for the weather, we do try and go out twice daily. When the snow does arrive, please be sure to send in boots, snow pants, hats, and gloves. Snow gear will go home daily due to lack of storage space. Also, no open toed shoes (we have wood chips outside on the playground). Please label all items with name or initials. Thanks in advance!!

Materials:

Please refer to the supply list for the school year for materials. We are asking you to send your child in each day with a backpack with their folder, reusable water bottle, and lunchbox. Please include your child's first and last name on each of these items. If you would like to donate to our classrooms these items are always in need; paper towels, tissues, white paper plates, and baby wipes.

Classroom Setup:

Classroom setup will ensure that students are able to interact with one another as this is crucial to the early childhood setting. This  includes work tables, sensory bins, learning and play centers, as well as a circle time rug where the whole class meets together several times daily.

Our staff will be cleaning and wiping down classroom materials throughout the day and after each use.

Snack:

Please send your child to school with a snack from home every day, and a hard water bottle labeled with their name. We will be encouraging students to open snacks independently. Staff will support students who need support opening a snack item, but we always encourage trying first before asking for help.

Hand washing:

Your child's teacher will be directly teaching hand washing. We have posters in the classroom and will have staff facilitating hand washing. This will occur when students enter the classroom, after and before using classroom materials, and before and after eating. Teachers will be reviewing a story on hand washing daily.

Drop Off: AM Early Start/Smart Start Preschool: The school bell rings daily at 8:35am.  Please pull up to the roundabout in front of SES no earlier than 8:20am, and remain in your vehicle.  Please have your child’s name and either Early Start Preschool or Smart Start Preschool, on a piece of paper, visible to staff , in your vehicle’s window.  Staff members will come to the arrival area at 8:25am.  Please stay in your vehicle until a staff member greets your vehicle.  At that point, please get your child out of the vehicle and give a quick last squeeze. We ask that you unbuckle your child, exiting them from the passenger side of the car. Please adhere to social distancing guidelines. Staff will then bring your child to our playground gate and classroom entrance.  If you have any important information to share please email me directly or write a note and place it in your child’s folder.

Please Note:  If someone else is picking up your child other than those designated on the dismissal sheet, please send in a note in your child's folder (we need to send this note to the office as soon as your child arrives at school).  If you would like to add someone to the daily dismissal sheet (i.e. grandparent, etc.) please write a note so that this person can be added to our sheet.  If your child is going home with another child in the class, both families must send a note in.  Also, that pick up person must have a picture ID with them. Thanks in advance for your cooperation with this! : )

Lunch and Snack Time:

Please send in a healthy lunch and snack daily for your child.  Smart Start eats lunch in our classroom at 11:30 each day. Please remember to send in a meal such as a ham or turkey sandwich, with a healthy side. Snack is at 1:15. We also use this time to talk about healthy foods and good choices. Please send in water only for your child to drink at lunch and snack.  We find it works best to send in a reusable water bottle daily. This is also a time when we practice opening food packages independently and cleaning up after ourselves.

Free and reduced lunches are available from the cafeteria if your family meets the income requirements. Forms are always at the school office and on the district’s website. Snacks are not provided, so your child would still need a healthy snack daily.

Healthy Snack Examples:

Crunchy Carbohydrate: ritz crackers, goldfish, graham crackers, pretzels, saltine crackers, veggie sticks

Fresh Fruit: banana, apple slices, peach, pear, berries, melons

Canned Fruit: peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, applesauce

Vegetables: carrot sticks, celery, broccoli

Dairy: yogurt, cheese stick, cottage cheese

Toileting:

Our classroom is equipped with a child-sized toilet and sink.  All students are encouraged to use the bathroom three times a day. The bathroom is always available as needed throughout the day. You may bring in flushable wipes if needed (please label) for your child to use. The staff cannot put their hands on a student to assist in toileting needs.  Staff can only verbally talk through the steps required.  Please let us know if your child requires help beyond this.

Cots:

Each student in full day preschool will have a personal cot for daily rest time.  Please bring in a clean small blanket (it must fit into their backpack) each Monday morning.  Whatever was brought on Monday will go home each Friday to be cleaned.  Please no stuffed animals or toys.  In the event that your child is absent on a Friday, please continue to bring in clean rest supplies.

Allergies in the Classroom:

We may have a few children with severe food allergies and therefore we will be washing hands a bit more frequently (at the beginning of our day, before and after eating, and as necessary).  Please see Allergy Alert included in this packet.

Birthdays:

As our class snacks are provided by families, we ask that if sending in a birthday snack, that it not be homemade (district policy) and that all ingredients are listed on the package.  Please be sure to check with us for student allergies.  We encourage parents to send in other special items for their child's day if this is something they wish to do (i.e. pencils, stickers, etc.)

Illness

The staff informally checks each child at the beginning of each day.  Children who appear ill at that time or as the day progresses are taken to the school nurse who will decide if the child should be allowed to remain in school.  If the child has any sign or symptom that would require returning home, the school nurse will contact the parent. To prevent the spread of illness, children should be kept home for a full twenty-four hours after the last episode of fever, vomiting, or diarrhea (without medication). Please call the school (860-749-2270) to report your child’s absence on a given day.

Flu Vaccination Requirement:

Per the Connecticut Department of Public Health, all preschool aged children are required to receive the flu vaccination.  Should you have any questions in regards to this requirement, please contact our school nurse. (see attachment)

Home/School Communication:

The main mode of communication is through the Seesaw App. Reminders, photos, and a monthly newsletter will be sent to the whole class.  Seesaw is also set up for private communication between teacher and parent.  If you should have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.  Email and Seesaw are often the fastest way!

Tuition Payments:

For students who are enrolled as peers, the tuition payment is due prior to the upcoming month. Please forward checks to the business office located at Mabelle B. Avery Middle School (Central Office located at the front of the building). You can send it in the mail, drop it off at the business office, or send it to the SES Main Office. Thanks in advance!

Please Note: The Somers Pre-K Family Handbook is intended to supplement the Somers Elementary School Parent Handbook. If you have questions which are not addressed in either of these publications, please contact the preschool staff. Purpose

Somers Elementary School houses an inclusion preschool program for children ages 3 to 5 who have been identified as eligible for special education services due to a significant delay in one or more of the following areas of development: physical, communication, cognition, social-emotional and/or adaptive, as well as peer role models.

Required special education and related services, as determined by the PPT, may include participation in the preschool program, speech and language, occupational and/or physical therapy.

Mission

Our mission is to provide a challenging and nurturing learning environment where all children are empowered to develop their unique talents and are prepared to contribute in an increasingly complex world.

Philosophy

A well-organized, child-centered preschool environment promotes the learning and skill development of young children through purposeful play.  Children begin to make sense of the world around them by interacting with their environment and, as a result, their natural curiosity is stimulated.  All children can thrive in an environment that is accepting of differences and where staff strives to meet each child’s individual needs.  Inclusion of children with diverse abilities can be a rewarding experience for all involved.

A multidisciplinary team comprised of a special education/early childhood teacher; speech/language, occupational and physical therapists; and paraprofessionals support the preschool curriculum.  The school psychologist, nurse, and social worker are also available as additional resources. The team collaborates to create opportunities to expand and enrich all areas of each child’s development. Children are viewed as unique individuals, exhibiting a range of skills and varying rates of development.

The curriculum is literacy-based and provides a framework for learning that encompasses all areas of a child’s development: cognitive, social and emotional, communication and language, sensorimotor, self-help and creative expression.

Schools cannot educate children alone.  Parents are the primary caregivers and educators of their children.  Their involvement in the preschool program is important. Staff members and families work collaboratively to ensure that each child is provided with optimal learning experiences.  It is important that information needed to support each child’s learning and development is shared between home and school.

We believe a nurturing and supportive climate serves young children well.  Children flourish in an active learning setting.  A supportive climate stimulates and strengthens children’s ongoing development of trust, autonomy, initiative, empathy and self-confidence.

Assessment of Student Learning

Forms of assessment include observations, checklists, rating scales, interview and individually-administered tests. Assessments serve to inform practice.  In other words, the preschool teacher and staff use this information to improve curriculum and adapt teaching practices as well as to advance program improvement efforts.

In additional to the initial developmental screening, in order to assess individual student strengths, needs, and progress, Somers Pre-K utilizes the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS), a curriculum-embedded tool for assessing students across the developmental benchmarks from Birth to Age 5. Observations of students engaged in developmentally appropriate learning activities, enable the teacher is able to connect assessment to curriculum in intentionally and sensitively planned and implemented learning experiences that address individual needs, are age appropriate, and are culturally responsive.

Written documentation of children’s development and learning is shared with parents/guardians at several times throughout the school year, currently December, March, and June.  In addition, for children who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings are also scheduled during the school year. These children are also assessed by the preschool teacher, speech/language pathologist, and occupational and physical therapists using the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development-III upon entry to and exit from the program. Also, standardized assessments are often used by the teacher and specialists in order to determine eligible children’s strengths and needs in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). When published assessment are used, they are evaluated in terms of standardization sample and procedures, scoring, reliability and validity to ensure that the results obtained are valid for our program’s purpose

Eclectic Approach to Delivering Curriculum

In order to meet the needs of all of our students, we utilize a combination of various teaching approaches.  Some of these approaches are described below!

The Creative Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum (Dodge, Colker and Heroman, 1998), a play-based center approach, offers teachers the guidance, support and freedom to be creative and responsive to children. Because children learn from their daily interactions with the environment, a carefully organized and rich environment is the foundation for the Creative Curriculum. Central to the use of the environment is an understanding of the potential of various materials to enhance learning and teaching, and knowledge of how these materials meet the developmental needs of young children.

Developmental Interaction – The Bank Street Approach

The Bank Street approach (Mitchell and David, 1992), a thematic/project investigation approach, is characterized by its emphasis on age appropriateness and individual appropriateness in early childhood programs. The work children do to understand their world is called social studies. Social studies is about making connections between self, family and community. Using social studies topics as a framework, teachers provide opportunities for experiences that help children learn concepts about the social world and master important skills. Through social studies, a teacher builds an integrated curriculum, one that helps children use the skills they are learning throughout the program in a meaningful context.

The High/Scope Approach

High/Scope, a play-based center approach (Hohmann and Weikart, 1995), is built on five basic principles: active learning, positive adult-child interactions, child friendly learning environment, and  consistent daily routine. In the High/Scope approach to early childhood education, adults and children share control. The curriculum recognizes that the power to learn resides in the child and, therefore, there is a focus on active learning practices. When learning comes from within, a critical balance is achieved in educating young children. The teacher supports and guides young children through their active learning adventures and experiences.

The Montessori Approach

Montessori schools use unique methods, materials and specially trained teachers. Essential characteristics of Montessori programs include: teachers specifically trained in Montessori philosophy and methods, partnership with families, multi-aged heterogeneous groups of children, use of Montessori materials and experiences carefully presented and sequenced to children’s needs; schedules that allow large blocks of time to problem-solve and become deeply involved in learning; and a classroom atmosphere that encourages social interaction for cooperative learning.

The Reggio Emilia Approach

This approach to education embraces children, families and teachers working together to make schools dynamic and democratic learning environments. The child is regarded as competent, strong, inventive and full of ideas. The classroom environment is designed to facilitate social construction of understanding, as well as nurture aesthetics. Partnerships are developed with parents, teachers, children and the larger community to facilitate collaboration in the learning process. Documenting children’s experiences provides a verbal and visual trace of children’s experiences and work, and opportunities to revisit, reflect and interpret. By listening closely to children’s interests teachers devise means for provoking further thoughts and actions. Children also are encouraged to make symbolic representations of their ideas using different kinds of media to represent those ideas.

TEACCH Approach (supporting children with Autism)

TEACCH developed the intervention approach called “Structured TEACCHing”, which is based on understanding the learning characteristics of individuals with autism and the use of visual supports to promote meaning and independence. TEACCH services are supported by empirical research, enriched by extensive clinical expertise, and notable for its flexible and individualized support of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families.

PRINCIPLES OF STRUCTURED TEACCHING

Discrete Trial Instruction (supporting children with autism)

Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is a method of teaching in simplified and structured steps. Instead of teaching an entire skill in one go, the skill is broken down and “built-up” using discrete trials that teach each step one at a time (Smith, 2001).

Parent Involvement

There are a variety of ways in which parents can be involved in our preschool Classrooms.  All efforts will enrich the children’s school experience and your own relationship with, and appreciation for, your child.  You can be directly involved in the class by sharing your special interests with us.

Some ideas include sharing hobbies, vocations, vacation experiences, gardening/artistic/musical talents, family/cultural traditions and languages. Volunteers are often needed for field trips, family day events, and project management. The children love to have their own parents come to school, and we love to have you! Parents are also encouraged to join the PTO.

Inclement Weather/Emergency Closings

During the school year, there may be days when school is closed, or school opening is delayed due to inclement weather or other emergencies.  This decision is made by the Superintendent of Schools and announced over TV and radio stations WWLP 22, WTNH 8, WVIT 30; WMAS, WDRC, WHYN, WTIC, WHCN, WRCH, WKISS, and WWYZ between 5:00 and 8:00 am.  A 2 hour delay will be the standard delay.

Discipline

Embedded within our program philosophy is teaching children responsibility for their behavior and being sensitive to the needs of others. Staff teaches children how to identify their emotions, and they are coached to resolve conflicts as they arise in the classroom. We use the terms “Thumbs Up” and “Thumbs Down” consistently to encourage positive behavior as well as modeling and correcting. The preschooler are also "Bucket Fillers".  This is a program where we talk about bucket filling and dippers to help guide positive behaviors. If a child exhibits behavioral concerns, the teacher and parents will work collaboratively to design a plan which will promote improvement in this area.

FOOD ALLERGY ALERT

Please be aware that there may be a student in your child's class who cannot be exposed to certain foods.  Homemade food items always have the potential of being cross-contaminated; for example, using a wooden spoon bearing residual peanut oil as a mixing tool for a batch of brownies might trigger an allergic reaction.  As of July 1, 2011, a revised Somers Board of Education policy #5141.25 prohibits the serving of homemade food items at classroom celebrations.  Commercially prepared foods served at school functions must bear their original manufacturer's label so that it can be checked by school personnel to make certain the food is safe for consumption by allergic students.

There are children with dietary allergies who also visit classrooms where no allergic students are enrolled.  So please be aware of the health concerns of all our students when determining what snack to send to school with your child.

For further information regarding Somers Board of Education policy #5141.25 on Accommodating Students with Special Dietary Needs, please visit the Somers Public School's website. Select Central Office/BOE and access the link entitled BOE policies.

Parking

Visitor/parent parking spaces are located in the parking lot adjacent to the kindergarten playground.  A few short-term visitor parking spaces are located near the front entrance for parents picking up children from the nurse’s office.  Parking is not permitted in the designated fire lanes.  Handicap parking spaces are clearly labeled and are available only for vehicles with handicap designation.

It is unlawful to pass school busses when their lights are flashing. The busses load and unload with their lights flashing in the circle in the front of the main entrance of the building. Please wait until the busses have turned their lights off before passing.

Field Trips

Field trips and nature walks are an important part of the educational program and will be taken periodically to nearby places in our community. Permission slips, signed by parents/guardians, are required for outings beyond our school campus. Our school district transportation provider is First Student; the dispatcher at the Bus Barn may be reached at 749-7957.

Safety

Safety is a major concern of staff.  An adult supervises children at all times.  The school performs scheduled inspections of all outdoor equipment, and the staff monitors the classroom for potentially dangerous situations.  A pediatric first aid/CPR certified staff member is in classroom at all times. In addition, a nurse is on duty during school hours as well as a School Resident Officer (SRO).

In addition, in order to prevent the spread of germs and infectious diseases, children are taught proper hand-washing techniques, as well as coughing and sneezing practices.  Children are required to clean their hands upon entry into the classroom (either washing or hand sanitizer), prior to and after using the exploration table, prior to snack, after toileting, and as needed (i.e. after using a tissue).
