In accordance with federal regulations, state statutes and local board of education policy, Somers Public Schools assumes the responsibility for the location, identification and referral of all children requiring special education and/or related services of children residing in the town of Somers.

Do you have concerns about your child’s development?

If you have concerns in regard to your child's development at any time, you are encouraged to contact staff in order for us to determine eligibility for special education services. Our PreK Team will conduct Information and Screening Sessions on Wednesdays as part of our Child Find obligation. Sessions will be held by appointment. Please call (860) 749-2270 Ext. 3102.

Q – What is special education for 3 & 4 year olds?

A - Special education is individualized special instruction for young children who are experiencing challenges in their learning and development.


Q – Who provides special education?

A – Your local school district is required by state and federal law to provide special education services for any child who requires these services.

Q – How do I know if my child needs services?

A – If you have concerns about your child’s learning and development, you can contact your local school program to request an evaluation.

Q – Who is eligible for special education services?

A – A child is eligible if they have a significant delay in one or more areas of development, such as learning, speaking or playing.

Where Can I Go For Help?


ü Call the Child Development Infoline at 1-800-505-7000 to link to Help Me Grow, which provides information on child development and a variety of community resources, or to find out about services in your town.

ü Call your local school district to see about developmental screenings that are available in your community.

ü Request an evaluation through your local school district if you note concerns about your child’s development.
