1 Minute Calming Resets

  • BOX BREATHING- 4 boxes of 4 breaths = 1 minute of mindful breathing (Especially good to do before assessments or when you sense the students are stressed.) Empower the students to tell you when they need a calming moment to breath or just relax. Box Breathing is also known as equal breathing (inhale and exhale are equal lengths) which will help CALM the students, but also help with FOCUS and CONCENTRATION.

  • 4-7-8 BREATHING- Utilize box breathing when students are overwhelmed with stress/anxiety. This type of breath the exhale is doubled, which is send a strong signal to the brain to RELAX!

  • QUIET MOMENT- Turn off lights and have a minute of silence

  • GRATITUDE- Journal for 1 minute about what they are grateful for and why. OR do a gratitude countdown with a classmate- share 3-5 things they are thankful for and WHY and switch. OR-write a letter or email of gratitude to someone. Think of a random act of kindness and share what you did the next day.

  • GROUNDING EXERCISE- Have students sit tall and find 5 things they SEE, close eyes and pay attention to 4 things they HEAR, 3 things they FEEL and 2 things they smell, 1 thing they TASTE.

  • POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS- 1) Have students think of a positive affirmation as they focus on their breath. 2) Have students tape a piece of paper on their back and have students write a positive comment on their classmates paper on their back. OR Have students put their name on a piece of paper and pass it around and have students write a positive comment about each person in class.

  • VISUALIZATION- Have students close their eyes and visualize a relaxing and/or beautiful place. Ask them to utilize their senses as they visualize this place. Another way to visualize-Visualize success! Have students visualize a what they are trying to learn/accomplish.

  • RELAXING MUSIC- This is great to incorporate when you notice students are tense.

  • NATURE NOISE- Play nature noise with a background of aquarium or beach.

  • POSITIVE MOMENT- Have students share one positive thing that happened today or a positive situation they were involved in recently.

  • CALM APP- Put the calm background projected on the screen for students. Let the students take turns picking what background they would like to see!

  • MINDFUL COLORING- Print out mindful coloring pages for students to choose from and let them share their work. Have student draw: their breath for one minute or free draw to music...

  • JOURNALING- Have students free write about a topic/question.

  • HUMMING- Let students HUM their favorite song and see if students can guess.

  • MINDFUL WALK- Have students walk outside for a set amount of time. Have them notice what they see, hear, smell and feel.
