Set between the University of Iowa in Iowa City and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, the Solon Community School District serves the educational needs of Solon. Located in one of the fastest growing areas in Iowa, the Technology Corridor, our district enjoys a diversified economic base yet has one of the lowest free-reduced school lunch percentage in Iowa. Currently, the district consists of three buildings, a high school, a middle school and an elementary school utilizing a Pre-K-4, 5-8, 9-12 grade level configuration. 1481 students attend the Solon Community School District.
Solon High School is a comprehensive four-year high school enrolling 473 students in grades nine through twelve. The school opened over 100 years ago and has continued to grow, taking in several rural one-room school districts in the mid-1900’s. Today, Solon High School is a bedroom community to Iowa City/Cedar Rapids and is accredited by the Iowa Department of Education.
The academic program is organized on a 4x4 Block schedule. A maximum load is 4 credits per quarter with students carrying four 80 minute block classes. All ninth and tenth grade students must be enrolled in four credits each quarter. Juniors and seniors must be enrolled in a minimum of three courses each quarter.
• Graduation requirements: A minimum of 56 credits is required for graduation. 1 credit = semester; 2 credits = I year. Graduation requirements include: 8 credits (4 years) Language Arts; 6 credits (3 years) Social Studies; 6 credits (3 years) math; 6 credits (3 years) Science; 4 credits (1 credit/year) Physical Education; 1 credit (.5 years) Health; 1 credit (.5 years) Personal Finance; 24 credits of electives.
• Advanced Placement (AP): Solon HS offers two AP Courses, English Literature and Composition and English Language and Composition. AP is an open-enrollment program. In 2022 - 2023, 23 students were enrolled in AP courses. In 2023 - 2024, 19 students enrolled in AP courses.
• Concurrent Enrollment: Concurrent course options are available to all juniors and seniors. Concurrent Enrollment courses include Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) courses through the University of Iowa, dual-enrollment courses that are taught at Solon HS, and courses the district contracts with Kirkwood Community College. Students receive both high school credit and college credit. In 2022 - 2023, 1 student enrolled in a PSEO course, 142 students enrolled in on-site dual-enrollment courses and 116 students enrolled in other concurrent enrollment courses. In 2023 - 2024, 2 students enrolled in PSEO courses, 152 students enrolled in on-site dual-enrollment courses and128 students enrolled in other concurrent enrollment courses.
• Advanced Courses are offered in all subject areas.
Solon High School utilizes a Standards-Based Grading System. Students are assessed based on learning goals and performance standards. Students are assigned letter grades using a 4.0 system. Letter grades are assigned as follows:
A = 93% - 100% C = 73% - 76%
A- =90% - 92% C- = 70% - 72%
B+ = 87% - 89% D+ = 67% - 69%
B = 83% - 86% D = 63% - 66%
B- = 80% - 82% D- = 60% - 62%
C+ = 77% - 79% F = 59% and less.
