When registering to take a standardized assessment (like the ACT or SAT), students will be asked to provide the "high school code". And sometimes, a college application may require a student to list their "high school code". The code identifies the high school you attend. The high school code is also referred to as the high school's CEEB Code.
Solon High School’s high school code/CEEB Code number is 164-085.
More and more post-secondary schools are "test optional". This means a student can submit a standardized test score as part of the admissions process but it is not required. If so, please consider a fall test date. Why? Research shows that students who have completed more core courses perform better on standardized assessments. Fall of senior year (the October ACT, for example) is a good time to take a standardized test because you will have completed your 1st quarter of courses-likely core courses-and you will be back in the swing of things academically.
Or ... consider taking the ACT in December. Why? You will have completed one semester of core courses and this increases your chances of performing better on the test.
See the schedule of test date offerings from both ACT & SAT (below).
Good Question. In January of 2022 the Iowa Board of Regents voted to permanently remove the standardized testing requirement for admission to Iowa’s public universities. Iowa State, University of Northern Iowa and The University of Iowa now offer a test optional application.
*Correct, each of these institutions is test optional for admissions purposes. If a student does not supply a test score, students will be admitted by individual review. What will the colleges review? 1) high school course history, and 2) high school cumulative grade point average. One final thing about this topic, the great majority of college admissions people do recommend students complete the ACT/SAT.
The Regents will keep the same mathematical formula to determine automatic admission of Iowa residents. The “Regents Admission Index” (RAI) uses high school GPA, relevant high school coursework and the ACT/SAT score to generate one numerical score for applicants. If the score is high enough, the student is admitted automatically.
*If you do plan on applying for scholarships at ISU, UNI & UI, you will need an ACT/SAT Test score as part of the application process.

Consider this. Students who have completed more core courses (i.e. Language Arts, Math, Science, etc.) produce higher scores on standardized assessments than students who have completed fewer core courses.
I recommend first time test takers complete a college entrance exam either in spring of junior year (April) or, even better, in summer at the end of junior year (June). Why? Because juniors will have completed more core courses In April/June than in either December or February. Better yet, for first time test takers, October of senior year is a good time since the October test date coincides with the end of our 1st quarter. (Which may benefit the student because of the ,”…more core courses completed…).
Good question. I hear this question a lot. I want you to know that a standardized assessment is only one piece colleges look at to try and determine if a student is academically ready for college. Here is a quick guide to determine which test fits you.
If the plan is to attend a four-year school right out of high school, then a student should consider taking either the ACT or the SAT. The ACT and SAT can help schools assess individual skills necessary for college coursework. Scores from these tests can assist in determining admittance into college and, in some cases, academic placement.
If you are planning on attending a two-year school (e.g., Kirkwood Community College), the schools will use an assessment to place students in the courses that match skill level. While community colleges can use the ACT for academic placement, community colleges use The Accuplacer Test to measure individual writing skills and reading skills and The ALEKS Test to measure individual math skills. There is no cost for the student to take either the Accuplacer Test or the Aleks Test. Both tests are taken on a computer and must be completed at a Kirkwood CC location. Students receive score results the same day. For more information visit the Kirkwood CC Testing Center.
FREE registration materials for both the ACT & SAT are available on their websites. A High School Code is needed to register for these exams. Solon High School’s code is: 164-085. Both ACT & SAT provide test preparation materials. The materials include strategies to prepare for the tests, full-length (retired) practice tests and information about what to expect on test day. Test prep materials are not available for either the Accupalcer Test or the Aleks Test.
