Exploring Takayama is like time travelling to olden-day Japan. This small, atmospheric town nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps is a favourite with domestic and international travellers alike. Wandering along narrow streets lined with Edo period wooden buildings is an utterly enchanting experience. Behind each noren curtain is a surprise––whether it’s a local craft shop, a heritage museum, or a century-old inn, there’s sure to be something to interest you at every turn. Plus, depending on when you’re visiting, you may be lucky enough to catch the fabulous Takayama Festival, which is held twice a year.
