Welcome to Kyoto! You’ll spend the next few days exploring Japan’s ancient capital. Kyoto is synonymous with traditional culture and cuisine––it was, after all, the nation’s capital for over a thousand years. Due to its significance, Kyoto was thankfully spared from the bombings of World War II. Consequently, there are now over 2,000 shrines and temples to explore, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Why not head to Nara, Japan’s ancient capital since 710 (only a 50-minute ride on the Nara Line from Kyoto station using the JR Pass) ? Many tourists come just to visit the Nara Park area, home to a number of famous temples such as Kasuga Taisha and the Daibutsu (Great Buddha) at Todai-ji Temple. Amazingly, many of the buildings and artefacts here date back as far as the 8th Century. The park is also famously home to hordes of roaming deer. These cute (but sometimes scary) critters will follow you hoping for some pre-purchased deer snacks.
