Experience the serene beauty of Japan’s wilderness with a hike along the Nakasendo, an ancient trail that winds through the Kiso Valley and connects the two charming historical post towns of Magome and Tsumago. Wander around these well-preserved, atmospheric towns to get a feel of what life was like in olden day Japan.
NAKASENDO WALK: MAGOME TO TSUMAGO
Step back in time and explore the ancient Nakasendo trail, one of the ‘Five Routes’ travelled by feudal lords on their way to the capital during the Edo period. Spanning 540 kilometres of stunning mountainous terrain between Kyoto and Tokyo, the Nakasendo trail features 69 post towns where travellers could rest during their long journey. The Kiso district is home to eleven of these historic post stations as well as one of the four security checkpoints, the Kiso-Fukushima Checkpoint. These towns prospered from the traffic and the Nakasendo grew to be one of the greatest trade routes of the time. Although Japan modernised and traffic moved away from the area, the Kiso towns successfully preserved the aesthetic of the Edo period. The streets and façades of the era remain, and visitors can even stay in the traditional guesthouses, and shop
The trail between Magome and Tsumago is a well-preserved section of the former Nakasendo highway. The walk is easy to moderate and well signposted in English. It is roughly 8 km in length and takes approximately three hours to complete at a relaxed pace and with breaks. The trail winds through the rural countryside, occasionally intersecting with the main road that hikers must walk along for short portions. A walk along the Magome–Tsumago trail is an essential part of any visit to the Kiso Valley. See: Japan Journeys–Magome to Tsumago

NAKASENDO WALK: YABUHARA TO NARAI
Narai post town marks the half-way point between Kyoto and Tokyo on the former Nakasendo trail. This section of the trail (the Torii Pass)
is particularly strenuous so travellers often needed to stop and rest here. As a result, Narai grew to be one of the most prosperous towns in
the Kiso Valley and received the nickname ‘Narai of a Thousand Houses’ due to the sheer abundance of guesthouses. The Torii pass hike is
8.5km long and takes roughly 2.5 hours to complete. It is said to be quieter than the Magome–Tsumago stretch but nonetheless beautiful.
The trail heads uphill from Yabuhara, past shrines and Mount Ontake views before gradually descending into Narai.
The charm of the Edo era remains in Narai today as many of the buildings have been carefully restored to their former glory and now contain
guesthouses, restaurants and souvenir shops. Two formerresidences are open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
