For those attending the Sumo Stable experience
Seeing sumo in action is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Japan, and watching a sumo practice contest should definitely be on your list of musts. By visiting a sumo stable and being witness to the morning training session, known as asageiko, you will have the privilege and unforgettable experience of watching this centuries-old sport at close quarters.
Some rules to follow for the smooth running of this activity:
Do not walk around the stable, stand in the ring or on the sandy floor.
Please be quiet in the stable. Even whispering can disturb the wrestlers.
When entering the stable, please remove your shoes. Sit cross-legged on the floor. Do not stretch your legs towards the ring. It is considered rude to show the soles of your feet to the wrestlers.
Take off your hat and sunglasses.
Do not eat, drink or smoke inside the ring.
You may take pictures (but not film) during training, but do not use flash or noisy shutter cameras.
Make sure you do not leave the stable during training.
