Hakone is a hot spring resort town located within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It is particularly known for its plentiful natural hot springs, idyllic Japanese inns, and the postcard-perfect views it offers of majestic Mt. Fuji across Lake Ashinoko on clear days. Sightseeing boats that look like replica pirate ships cruise across the lake throughout the day, offering visitors a myriad of photo opportunities of the spectacular natural scenery and magnificent views.
Hakone’s proximity to Tokyo makes it ideal for a weekend getaway of fun and relaxation. The Hakone Tozan switchback train winds its way through mountains and tunnels, while the Hakone Ropeway soars above the landscape.
The ropeway passes over Mt. Owakudani, an active volcanic zone where sulphurous fumes escape from steam vents. Owakudani can be translated as ‘Great Boiling Valley,’ and visitors will not be disappointed by this descriptive name and the smell that pervades the area. It is definitely an impressive and memorable experience that visitors will remember. On clear days, Mt. Fuji is visible from the ropeway and from the station area. Both local and international visitors try the famous Owakudani Black Eggs. These eggs are hard-boiled in the hot springs, creating a chemical reaction which turns the shells black. It is said to be good luck to eat one of these.
