Why Solaire builds net-zero homes...
When this project began our aim was clear: secure Net Zero Energy certification through Earth Advantage, earn Energy Star for New Homes, and score well with Energy Trust of Oregon EPS. At Solaire Homebuilders, we prioritize Earth Advantage certification, tailoring goals to client needs. Now, a prime opportunity arose - showcasing expertise with Central Oregon Builders’ Association Showcase Home 2023.
Success was twofold. Technical benchmarks were measured through performance testing and third-party verification. Yet, the true test lay in clients’ comfort, utility bills, and overall satisfaction. Our technical ambitions were high: achieving Net Zero Energy, maintaining under 2.5 ACH air leakage, and ensuring superior indoor air quality.
Our journey began with a standard floor plan, elevated into a high-performance Net Zero Energy home. We replaced exterior walls with 8” double-2x4 staggered-studs, bolstered by R-33 blown-in-blanket insulation. Modified trusses allowed R-60 attic insulation. Enhanced floor insulation, fixed and casement windows, and a ductless mini-split cold-climate heat pump ensure efficiency. An Energy Recovery Ventilator added top-notch indoor air quality. A heat pump water heater, hot-water recirculation, and smart water controls are designed to conserve resources. Induction cooking and an electric fireplace bid farewell to gas.
Results were remarkable. Third-party tests showed 2.31 ACH air leakage, exceeding our goal. A 6.6 kW solar array offset 100% of the home's annual energy consumption. The 2023 Tour of Homes yielded six awards, including Best High Performance Home, Best Architectural Design, and Best of Show.
In the end, this journey wasn't just about achieving technical milestones. It was a testament to our commitment at Solaire Homebuilders - a commitment to pushing boundaries, embracing innovation, and crafting living spaces that aren’t just environmentally conscious but also symbolize a greener, more comfortable future for homeowners.
