Why the frosts chose to build net -zero...

As homeowners, the goal of this project was to build a sustainable home that was comfortable, energy efficient, and healthy. We really wanted to see how far we could go within our budget to not only reduce or eliminate off-site energy use, but also to greatly reduce water consumption.  As great as it has been to see our electricity bill disappear, we find the experience of living here to be the real payoff.  The super insulated house is so much quieter than any home we’ve lived in until now, an unexpected bonus when living close to a major airport, and the high insulation allows the home to remain at a steady temperature year round.

As experienced home builders, we sought to showcase our 25 years of expertise and passion for sustainable, energy-efficient construction. While we had integrated green upgrades in previous projects, achieving Zero Energy status was an exciting new endeavor. Our approach encompassed every phase, from meticulous design to constructing a highly insulated shell. We sourced the most efficient systems and sustainable materials, employing zero VOC wood finishes and paints throughout. Although technically a remodel, the project leaned heavily towards new construction, enabling innovative techniques. A well-considered building shape, solar-oriented roofs, and strategic shading were all part of the design.

It took us a long time to find the right property. Even after careful selection, there were site limitations, but were able to overcome these issues and still succeed in meeting our goals with detailed planning and assembling a top notch team to problem solve and execute the build.  This included partnering with Earth Advantage to achieve our Zero Energy Certification.  They were an essential ally in making the process smooth and providing additional knowledge and resources on this build.

Ultimately, we were driven by a desire to create a space our family can be proud of and to set an example for our customers, friends, and community of the type of beautiful and healthy home that can be an alternative to the standard code-built house we are used to.  It feels great to be able to say that we exceeded our goals.
