9th grade English is a course designed as a reading and writing apprenticeship to develop and elevate the basic skills of students as mature readers and writers through the analysis of complex texts in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, spoken/visual texts, and film. Students will read and analyze a variety of works by numerous authors, highlighting various aspects of rhetorical strategy and stylistic approach.
This course is committed to equitable practices when it comes to how we read, write, and learn about the world around us including, but not limited to, creating more space for authors and artists of color, representation of various learning styles and accessibility points, and distribution of additional resources to enhance and support understanding.
This course centers around reading, writing, discussion, and community. We offer many opportunities for student choice, in terms of reading and writing, in order for students to be able to reflect on who they are as students, learners, and people. This course allows students to explore writing in a variety of forms such as creative, connection-based, synthesis, and empowerment. Our year-long essential question is: How does literature impact and reflect the world around us? We hope that over the course of our time together, students will be able to understand and embody the significance of being a student of literature and of our world.
