Welcome to 8th grade History!
This year, we will be studying American History from 1865 to, hopefully, the present. We will learn that many of the challenges and questions that faced us in the past are still things we struggle with as a country today – war and foreign policy, immigration, equality, justice for people and the earth, activism and reform, and the cost and benefits of progress. So throughout the year, we will be tracking current events, listening to our families and neighbors, and trying to understand what justice is and how we are to respond as an individual and also as a community.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
What are the roadblocks to a functioning democracy and how can we overcome them?
How do you balance people’s need for freedom and equity?
Why is it so important to understand both liberal and conservative viewpoints on issues?

Year at a Glance:
Our curriculum is broken down into two major units:
UNIT 1 is our domestic policy unit, in which we cover why positive change is so hard, and what it means to be liberal and conservative, before going back in time to track the growth of government regulation of immigration, medical care, labor, education, economy, and civil rights in the late 19th-20th centuries.
UNIT 2 covers America’s history of foreign policy, including late 19th- early 20th century imperialism, World War I, World War II, the Cold War (including the Vietnam War), and modern-day interventionism/internationalism.
