Early in the year, your elementary student will be learning about conflict resolution skills to help them resolve peer conflicts. One of the first things taught will be I-Messages. The purpose of these messages are to take ownership of one's own feelings instead of using accusatory language. Students will also be taught skills such as recognizing and being able to describe their emotions, self-regulation skills, and how to practically apply these skills through role-play.
Peer Mediation
Peer Mediation Program (Grades 3-5)
Train interested students further in deeper conflict resolution skills.
Have a sign-up schedule for recess for designated Peer Mediators for each day of the week
Smaller situations will be able to be mediated by the Peer Mediators.
Peer Mediators can then report to Mr. O about what they mediated and have it documented.
Programming:
After the August and September lessons, students will be able to volunteer for further training in becoming Peer Mediators.
There will be weekly sign-ups for kids to sign-up during their lunch slots.
For lunch recess, the assigned daily mediators will wear Mediator vests and will be the ones that handle any smaller peer conflicts that arise during the recess period.
A Mediation Request form will also be made that students can fill out, and depending on what the conflict is, a couple of the peer mediators may be pulled to address the conflict.
A form will be filled out and followed during a mediation session, which will then be given to Mr. O afterwards to be able to follow-up on the proposed resolution.
