Starting this year, the SODA is implementing a new school-wide procedure for addressing and documenting bullying. There are four steps to this process and the goal is to have a comprehensive system to catch any and all bullying that is happening and to be more communicative with parents if there is any bullying occurring with your student.
Once a month, teachers will give their students a short peer nomination survey (example link: https://forms.gle/qCHXV5HcKY9RjX7y6). These surveys will be entirely anonymous.
For the first couple of months, I will be doing lessons on bullying and peer conflict in elementary to help students recognize what is actually bullying and what is just peer conflict. They will also be taught skills to mediate peer conflict.
Students can also be nominated by teachers or parents by contacting me, Jacob Omlor, with their concerns via email (jomlor@sodacharter.com), phone call or by appointment. If informed this way, these students will go straight to step 2.
Any student who gets nominated at least three times will then be interviewed by myself and the student will be classified into one of 4 categories:
1: Student is actively being bullied (within 30 days)
2: Student was being bullied (over 30 days since)
3: Student is experiencing peer conflict
4: Student was nominated as a joke/misunderstanding
Any student who is classified in category one will then proceed to the next step. Students who fall under category 2 will have their parents called to inform them we are monitoring the situation and to make sure they let us know if they hear anything from their student that we don’t. Students in category 3 will be offered mediation support.
For students who fall under category 1, the student who is bullying will be first interviewed by myself (Mr. O). Afterwards, parents of both the one bullying and the one being bullied will be called and separate meetings will be held for the students with a team consisting of the counselor, admin, parent, student, and teacher (if available).
The situation will be monitored through either self-report from the student, communication with parents, or through the monthly peer nomination surveys. If for any reason the bullying continues, then more meetings with parents can be scheduled. We should have a set of clear consequences for every stage that can be referred to and used during this whole process as well.
