Directions: To continue and maintain the learning your student made over the course of the school year a summer reading assignment has been issued to all students who will be enrolled at Social Circle High School for the 2018-19 school year.

Find the page that corresponds with the grade your child will be in during the upcoming 2018-19 school year (i.e Rising 9th, Rising 10th, Rising 11th, Rising 12th). Choose one of the texts to read. Please note that it is imperative that you read the book summaries, and select the novel that best aligns with your family’s values and beliefs.

The summer reading assignment will be due within the first 3 weeks of the 2018-19 school year. There will also be a separate formative assessment over your novel of choice.

If your student will be in Accelerated 9th, or Accelerated 11th there is an additional assignment students are expected to complete in addition to the reading of the of assigned texts. Question: How were these books chosen?

Answer: Each of the books selected have been identified nominees for the Georgia Peach Book Award. The Georgia Peach Book Award for Teen Readers was established to help promote reading and literacy skills in teens. The criteria for this award were developed using modified guidelines developed for the Georgia Book Awards and the Kentucky Blue Grass Award. The Georgia Peach Award will be administered by the Georgia Library Media Association, Georgia Library Association, Georgia Public Library Service.

Each year titles are researched by the Reading Committee members. School media specialists, teachers, librarians and students are encouraged to submit titles for consideration. In early winter, the committee meets to narrow the list to 20 titles. The purpose of this project is to highlight and promote the best of young adult literature for Georgia high school age students.

Question: What are Lexiles?

Answer: The Lexile Framework for Reading is an educational tool that uses a measure called a Lexile to match readers with books, articles and other leveled reading resources. Readers and books are assigned a score on the Lexile scale, in which lower scores reflect easier readability for books and lower reading ability for readers.
