Placement into dance levels at San Marino High School is determined by a combination of technical ability, artistic maturity, professionalism, and readiness to contribute meaningfully to the classroom and performance environment. Our goal is to place each student in the level where they will be challenged, supported, and able to grow.
Most freshmen are placed in Intermediate Dance to establish foundational understanding and integrate into the program.
Placement into Advanced Dance is typically reserved for returning students who have demonstrated consistent technical strength, program participation, professionalism, and rehearsal discipline.
Exceptions may be made for freshmen or new students who meet Advanced-level criteria through a formal evaluation.

Level changes may occur at the start of the year after a pre-assessment period. Changes are made at the discretion of the instructor with student growth and class balance in mind. Students are encouraged to trust the process and see each level as an opportunity to refine and develop their craft.
